We are seeking an experienced Product Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Engineer to become an important part of this process and serve as the technical subject matter expert for product compliance and regulatory requirements.

Description

This role is responsible for helping ensure the organization follows regulations and applicable standards related to the design, manufacture, packaging, and sale of our products. You will research global regulatory requirements, identify compliance risks, participate in product reviews and risk assessments, coordinate testing and certification, and work directly with design and engineering teams to incorporate compliance requirements into products.

This is a hands-on role within a small research and development environment. Our diverse product portfolio may include consumer glass products, mechanical hand tools, industrial work-holding equipment, HVAC control electronics, HVAC equipment, hydroponics growing equipment, and related products. You will help determine what safety, environmental, certification, labeling, and import/export requirements apply and help ensure those requirements are addressed as technologies move from laboratory prototypes to products ready for market.

Duties

Regulatory Research & Product Development

· Research global industry standards, regulations, certification requirements, and regulatory concerns for new and revised products and new markets, and clearly communicate findings to engineering, product development, manufacturing, and management teams.

· Determine applicable regulatory and product safety requirements for consumer, industrial, HVAC, hydroponics, and other products, including requirements under Health Canada’s CCPSA, U.S. CPSC regulations, EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), OSHA,



and applicable European machinery requirements.

· Assist with new product reviews and provide design teams with practical guidance on compliance requirements early in the development process.

· Participate in risk assessments, functional safety reviews, FMEA, and other activities used to identify and reduce product compliance and safety risks.

· Assist with the development and maintenance of internal design standards that incorporate applicable regulatory and product safety requirements.

· Develop processes and recommend techniques that improve product compliance, reduce regulatory risk, and make compliance activities more efficient.

Testing, Certification & Compliance Documentation

· Assist with product testing and certification activities required for products entering Canadian, U.S., European, and other markets.

· Coordinate with third-party testing laboratories such as Intertek, SGS, and TÜV to schedule testing, coordinate samples, review results, and follow up on deficiencies.

· Support CE marking activities, including technical file preparation and Declaration of Conformity (DoC) documentation for applicable products exported to Europe.

· Maintain complete and organized technical compliance files, test reports, declarations, certifications, risk assessments, and other records demonstrating product conformity.

· Assess materials and products against applicable chemical and environmental requirements, including FDA and EU food-contact requirements, REACH, RoHS, and California Proposition 65, as applicable.

· Assist with managing product material reporting requirements and maintaining the information necessary to support regulatory and customer requirements.

Labeling, Documentation & Market Compliance

· Audit existing product labels, packaging, instruction manuals, safety warnings, and rating plates to ensure safety, environmental, and regulatory language is accurate and appropriate for the applicable market.

· Review and approve multilingual packaging, manuals, labels, and other product documentation for regulatory accuracy.

· Monitor changes to applicable standards and regulations and assess their impact on existing and planned products.

· Work with logistics and supply chain teams to support accurate HS codes, country-of-origin information, and customs documentation.

· Support post-market compliance activities, including product audits, field corrections, recalls, and consumer safety reporting where required.

Engineering Procedures, Training & Continuous Improvement

· Develop and maintain engineering procedures, work instructions, and compliance processes that support consistent product development and regulatory compliance.





· Develop training materials and provide training to aid with the onboarding of new employees and to improve understanding of applicable compliance requirements.

· Work closely with engineers, scientists, designers, manufacturing personnel, suppliers, and external laboratories to resolve compliance issues and support successful product launches.

· Identify compliance gaps and develop practical solutions that balance regulatory requirements with product design, manufacturing, cost, and schedule considerations.

Qualifications and Requirements

Required Experience & Education

· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Quality Assurance, Law, or a related technical discipline.

· 3 to 5+ years of regulatory affairs, product compliance, certification, quality, or related experience within a manufacturing, product development, or technical environment.

· Demonstrated experience supporting or managing product compliance activities for products sold in Canada, the United States, and/or the European Union.

Technical & Skilled Skills

· Experience interpreting and applying product safety standards, regulations, testing requirements, and certification requirements.

· Knowledge of applicable frameworks and standards, including UL, CSA, CE, OSHA, REACH, RoHS, FDA, and CPSC requirements.

· Experience managing compliance for a diverse portfolio of consumer products and industrial equipment is an asset.

· Strong technical writing and documentation skills, with the ability to create clear compliance files, procedures, reports, and audit trails.

· Excellent attention to detail and ability to research, interpret, and communicate complex regulatory requirements.

· Strong organizational and project-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple products, testing activities, requirements, and deadlines.

· Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, scientists, suppliers, testing laboratories, logistics personnel, and management.

· Ability to work independently, identify compliance gaps, investigate requirements, and develop practical solutions in a fast-moving R&D; environment.
