If you are a Registered Nurse (RN) looking to enhance your skillset and become specialized in the care of acute neuroscience patients, look no further! Neurosciences units at the University of Alberta Hospital are one of a kind within Alberta Health Services that provide specialized care that includes the management of acute strokes, brain injuries, brain tumours, spinal cord injuries and other neurological issues. In this position, the acute neuroscience/neurosurgery RN works to full scope of practice providing nursing care for patients and families.

This is done within a team-forward environment that prides itself in the multidisciplinary collaboration amongst NP’s, LPN’s, HCA’s, MD’s, OT, PT, and SW, dietician and pharmacist. As such, a robust commitment to teamwork is reflected in our daily practice which relies on excellent inter-professional communication. Neurosciences ward units provide advancement opportunities including care required during insertion and/or management of drains, acute management of patients experiencing a stroke, spinal cord injuries and/or other acute neurological issues.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical think problem-solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance.

You will provide safe, quality patient family-centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

As a Registered Nurse (RN),

PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Required Qualifications

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).

Current Basic Cardiac Life

Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification.

Additional Required Qualifications

Recent Neuroscience experience required, 6 months to 1 year.

Lumbar

Drain, Spinal Assessment and TORBSST trained. Active registration and practice permit with the CRNA. BCLS- HCP required. The candidate must have the physical capability to perform all aspects of the role, including the ability to lift up to and including 50 lbs.

Basic computer skills required. Strong leadership and critical thinking skills, demonstrated by the ability to direct other healthcare workers, problem solve and escalate clinical concerns in a timely and appropriate manner. The position requires strong communication and organizational skills and must be committed to patient and family centered care.

Demonstrated ability to maintain collaborative working relationships with patients, families and team members. Successful applicants will undergo Neuroscience Orientation Classes followed by supervised buddy shifts. The buddy shifts are intended to support practical learning, skills development, and integration into the clinical environment.

Applicants must successfully complete and pass the buddy shift evaluation to be eligible for entry into the program. Responsible to provide proof of active registration with the CRNA and to maintain registration throughout the duration of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

1 to 2 years of Neuroscience-Neurosurgery experience preferred. Connect care experience preferred.
