The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) is seeking a Registered Nurse, Intensive Care to join the Critical Care Services team at Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife.
As part of Stanton's Intensive Care Unit, you will provide advanced nursing care to critically ill patients whose conditions may be unstable and unpredictable. This is a hands-on critical care role that combines specialized clinical practice with emergency response, patient advocacy and collaboration across an interdisciplinary hospital team.
About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, Critical Care Services, you will assess, plan, deliver and evaluate care for critically ill patients requiring continuous monitoring and specialized interventions. You will work closely with physicians and other health professionals, support patients and families through complex health situations, and may participate in Medical Emergency Team and Code Blue responses throughout Stanton Territorial Hospital.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill patients, including assessment, care planning, intervention, monitoring and evaluation.
- Use specialized critical care equipment, medications and clinical techniques to respond to complex and rapidly changing patient needs.
- Support patient-centred care by promoting dignity, autonomy, cultural safety and clear communication with patients and families.
- Participate in Medical Emergency Team and Code Blue responses and provide critical care support in other hospital units when required.
- Coordinate patient admissions, transfers and discharges and provide individualized education to patients and families.
- Provide leadership, mentoring and support to colleagues and students, including acting as Team Leader when experience and operational requirements permit.
Qualifications Required
Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
- A Nursing Degree, a Certificate in Critical Care Nursing, and one year of recent ICU/Critical Care experience.
- Current registration with the College and Association of Nurses of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (CANNN) prior to commencement of employment is mandatory.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is mandatory and must be completed within one year of hire. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is preferred and should be completed within the first two years of employment.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
