Role Description This is a full-time remote role for a Relay Settings Engineer.
The Relay Settings
Engineer will develop, review, and optimize protection and control settings for utility-scale renewable and traditional energy projects, ensuring reliable and safe operation of electrical systems. Daily responsibilities include performing short-circuit and coordination studies, configuring and testing protective relays, analyzing system events and misoperations, and preparing clear documentation and reports. The role also involves collaborating with electrical and SCADA engineers, supporting commissioning and field teams, and maintaining compliance with applicable standards, codes, and client requirements.
The engineer will work closely with project managers and clients to clarify technical needs, provide recommendations, and contribute to continuous improvement of protection practices.
Qualifications
- Strong foundation in power systems engineering, including protection principles, relay coordination, and system modeling.
- Experience with configuring and testing protective relays (e.g., SEL, GE, ABB or similar) and related protection and control equipment.
- Proficiency with power system analysis tools (such as ETAP, ASPEN, CAPE, or similar) for short-circuit and coordination studies.
- Ability to interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, and protection settings files, and translate them into clear documentation.
- Knowledge of relevant industry standards and codes (e.g., IEEE, NERC, IEC, ANSI) and utility interconnection requirements.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills, particularly in evaluating system events and misoperations.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate in multi-disciplinary and remote teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; advanced degree or professional licensure (EIT/PE) is a plus.
- Experience with utility-scale renewable energy, transmission, or substation projects is highly beneficial.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment, manage multiple projects, and meet schedule and quality expectations.
