Layout Contracting is looking for an experienced Residential Renovation Lead / Working Foreperson to join our team.

We complete most aspects of our renovation projects in-house, so this position requires someone who is highly versatile and comfortable working beyond traditional carpentry. The right person will have strong carpentry skills but must also be capable of completing drywall, flooring, tile, painting, exterior work, and general renovation tasks to a professional standard.

This is a hands-on leadership position. You will work directly with the owner to plan daily activities, guide employees, maintain quality standards, and keep projects progressing efficiently. We need someone who sets a productive pace, takes ownership, and is willing to work alongside the crew to get the job done.

Responsibilities

- Lead by example while working alongside a small renovation crew
- Establish daily priorities and keep the team productive and focused
- Plan ahead and ensure required tools and materials are ready
- Complete projects from demolition through to final finishing
- Read and work from construction drawings, plans, and specifications
- Perform rough and finish carpentry
- Complete framing and structural modifications
- Install doors, windows, trim, cabinetry, flooring, siding, and decking
- Install and repair drywall, including taping, mudding, and sanding
- Complete tile preparation, installation, grouting, and finishing
- Perform painting, surface preparation, and finishing work
- Complete kitchen, bathroom, basement, addition, and exterior renovations
- Coordinate with electricians, plumbers, engineers, inspectors, and other licensed trades
- Identify problems early and recommend practical solutions
- Monitor workmanship and correct deficiencies before they become larger issues
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe jobsites
- Communicate project progress, concerns, and material requirements to the owner




- Interact respectfully and professionally with homeowners

Qualifications
- At least five years of well-rounded residential renovation experience
- Strong experience in both rough and finish carpentry
- Demonstrated ability across several renovation trades
- Previous experience leading employees or managing small to mid-sized projects
- Red Seal Carpenter certification is strongly preferred but not required
- Strong understanding of residential construction practices and proper project sequencing
- Ability to complete projects from demolition through to finishing
- Ability to plan ahead and work independently without constant supervision
- Solid sense of urgency while maintaining quality and attention to detail
- Dependable, punctual, organized, and accountable
- Comfortable providing clear and respectful direction to employees
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Willing to perform any reasonable task required to keep a project moving
- Valid Nova Scotia driver’s licence with a clean driver’s abstract
- Ability to safely operate company pickups and tow trailers
- Must live within a reasonable commuting distance of Hammonds Plains

About US Layout Contracting is a licensed and insured residential renovation company based in Hammonds Plains. We are WCB compliant, a member of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Nova Scotia, and maintain an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

We complete additions, structural renovations, kitchens, bathrooms, basements, decks, exterior improvements, and detailed finish work. Most aspects of our projects are completed by our own team, with licensed subcontractors brought in where required for electrical, plumbing, and other regulated work.

Most of our projects are located between Bedford, Hammonds Plains, Hubbards, and the St. Margaret’s Bay area. Our team meets in Hammonds Plains each morning before travelling to the day’s project.

The Right Person

This position is best suited to someone who takes pride in a productive day, notices what needs to be done without waiting to be told, and enjoys helping a team perform at a higher level.

You must be comfortable leading the work, making decisions, solving problems, and picking up the tools to work alongside the crew. This is not a position for someone who only wants to perform one specific trade or wait for daily instructions.

Pay: $26.00-$36.00 per hour
