Lions Housing Centres Inc. is seeking an analytical Senior Accountant to oversee the organization's day-to-day accounting operations and ensure the accurate, timely, and compliant management of all financial activities. Working closely with the Executive Director, finance team, management, and external stakeholders, the Senior Accountant is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the organization's financial records while supporting sound financial decision-making.
This position is responsible for the full cycle accounting function, including financial reporting, account reconciliations, government remittances, audit preparation, and oversight of accounts payable and accounts receivable. The Accountant ensures financial processes comply with applicable legislation, accounting standards, organizational policies, and funding requirements. This role is ideal for a highly organized professional with strong analytical skills, exceptional attention to detail, and experience working in a multi-entity, preferably not-for-profit, environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform day-to-day accounting activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and supporting working papers.
- Complete monthly bank reconciliations and investigate discrepancies as required.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of government remittances, filings, and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Prepare and reconcile balance sheet accounts and other financial schedules.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and variance reporting.
- Coordinate year-end financial activities and prepare supporting documentation for external auditors.
- Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors during the annual audit process.
- Oversee the accounts payable and accounts receivable functions to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and timely processing.
- Monitor cash flow and assist with financial planning activities.
- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), organizational policies, and applicable legislation.
- Support financial reporting requirements for funding agencies, including the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA), and other stakeholders as required.
- Prepare financial reports and analyses for the Executive Director, management, and Board of Directors as required.
- Ensure employee benefit deductions are accurately recorded and reconciled.
- Oversee the preparation, processing, and approval of bi-weekly payroll through Payworks, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable requirements.
- Prepare cost analysis and financial reports for the food services departments and other legal entities, as required.
- Maintain and improve accounting processes, internal controls, financial procedures, and documentation.
- Provide guidance and support to finance staff while assisting with workflow coordination and process improvements.
- Support cross-functional initiatives by collaborating with management and other departments on financial matters.
- Maintain confidentiality of financial and organizational information.
- Perform other accounting, finance, and administrative duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Formal post-secondary education in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- Professional accounting designation (CPA) or progress toward designation.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in a similar accounting role.
- Experience supervising or coordinating finance staff is preferred.
- Experience working within a not-for-profit, multi-entity organization, and/or unionized workplace is considered an asset.
- Experience working in a long term care facility similar is considered an asset, particularly experience managing and reporting on funding received from the WRHA.
- Proficiency with Great Plains and QuickBooks Online is considered an asset.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Experience preparing financial statements, government remittances, reconciliations, and audit working papers.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy in data entry and financial reporting.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership, planning, and organizational abilities.
- Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new systems.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
