Senior Controls Engineer
SMI Automation (Canada) Inc. is a leading designer and builder of custom automation systems, robotics, and advanced manufacturing equipment serving the transportation, oil & gas, and mining sectors. We deliver turnkey automation solutions ranging from robotic assembly and machining systems to adhesive application, material handling, and complex manufacturing processes. As we continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to lead automation projects and mentor a highly skilled manufacturing team.
This position will report to the Engineering Manager.
Technical Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement PLC, HMI, SCADA, and industrial control systems.
- Develop automation architectures and control strategies for custom machinery and robotic cells.
- Specify instrumentation, control valves, automation hardware, and robotic equipment
- Program, configure, and commission industrial robots (Fanuc, KUKA, ABB, Yaskawa).
- Integrate robotic systems with plant automation infrastructure.
- Develop robot safety systems and conduct risk assessments in accordance with ANSI/RIA standards.
- Create electrical schematics, control narratives, and pneumatic designs using AutoCAD.
- Perform system testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and startup support.
- Establish and maintain controls and robotics standards.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop Controls Engineers and Robotics Technicians as required.
- Assign project work and monitor team performance.
- Support recruitment, training, and employee development initiatives.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide technical coaching.
Project Management Responsibilities
- Manage project schedules, budgets,
scope, and resource allocation.
- Coordinate with customers, suppliers, contractors, and internal departments.
- Provide regular project status updates and documentation.
- Ensure project compliance with applicable safety and engineering standards.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of experience in industrial automation and controls engineering, including at least 5 years supporting manufacturing or industrial operations.
Minimum 3-5 years experience as a team leader
- Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Ability to work in AutoCAD to design electrical and pneumatic prints
- Proven ability to track complex challenges using analytical precision, and an optimistic, proactive approach.
- Ability to travel as required for commissioning/trouble shooting
- Strong organizational and workload planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Ability to organize and schedule tasks
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience with custom machine design and build environments.
- Knowledge of machine safety standards (CSA, ANSI, ISO).
- Experience with servo motion control systems.
- Industrial networking experience (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP, etc.).
