Senior Excavator Operator / Civil Pipelayer – Underground Utilities & Deficiency Work

We are seeking a highly experienced Excavator Operator / Civil Pipelayer to take a lead field role completing civil deficiencies on an active residential development in Langford.

This is not an entry-level operator position. We need someone who understands underground civil construction, can safely excavate around live gas and other active utilities, can read civil drawings and deficiency reports, and can take a deficiency list from paper to completed field work with little to no supervision.

The successful applicant will be expected to identify the work, plan the excavation, complete underground repairs and civil work, restore the excavation, and help bring the site through final grading and paving preparation.

Key Responsibilities

- Safely operate excavators for civil and underground utility work.
- Excavate around live gas lines and other active utilities, including water, sanitary, storm, hydro, telecommunications and shallow utilities.
- Follow utility locates, safe-dig procedures and required excavation/exposure practices at all times.
- Read and interpret civil IFC drawings, record drawings, elevations, grades and deficiency reports.
- Take engineer/consultant deficiency lists and accurately locate and complete the required work in the field.
- Perform civil pipe installation, replacement and repair involving:

- Sanitary sewer

- Storm drainage

- Water services

- Service connections and cleanouts

- Catch basins and manholes
- Brooks boxes / service boxes
- Excavate and replace or repair damaged PVC sewer and drainage services.
- Set pipe to proper line and grade using laser, grade information and civil drawings.




- Complete bedding, pipe installation, backfill and compaction.
- Repair and adjust cleanouts, service boxes, manholes and other civil structures.
- Complete deficiency-related excavation and repairs throughout the project.
- Perform fine grading and subgrade preparation.
- Prepare roadways, parking areas and excavated areas for base gravel and asphalt paving.
- Coordinate effectively with labourers, pipelayers, surveyors, engineers and project management.
- Maintain organized, safe and productive work areas.
- Identify potential conflicts or additional deficiencies before they become larger problems.

Required Experience Applicants must have proven civil underground utility experience.

You should be comfortable working independently and must have demonstrated experience with:

- Excavating immediately adjacent to live gas and other live utilities.
- Underground civil pipe installation and repair.
- Sanitary, storm and water systems.
- Reading civil construction drawings and interpreting grades/elevations.
- Working from engineering or consultant deficiency lists.
- Excavating and troubleshooting existing underground infrastructure.
- Pipe bedding, backfilling and compaction.
- Fine grading and road/paving preparation.
- Operating excavators accurately in tight, congested civil sites.

You must be able to think ahead, troubleshoot underground conditions and make sound field decisions without requiring constant supervision.

General excavator experience alone is not sufficient for this position.

Applicants without substantial civil utility and pipe experience will not be considered.

Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a solid civil excavator operator who also understands pipelaying — not simply an equipment operator.

You understand how the entire underground system works, know what the pipelayer needs before the bucket moves, can maintain line and grade, recognize conflicts, protect existing infrastructure and leave the excavation properly restored and ready for the next phase of construction.

Compensation

Competitive hourly wage based on demonstrated experience and capability.

Top compensation will be available for an operator who can independently manage the civil deficiency scope and consistently produce high-quality work with minimal supervision.
