Senior Structural Steel Estimator
Location: Sarnia, Ontario
Position: Full time, permanent, on site
Salary: $80,000 to $110,000 per year, based on experience
About ProMart
ProMart Industrial is a third generation, family built structural steel fabricator and industrial contractor that has been operating in Sarnia since 1985.
Our facilities include an 80,000 square foot fabrication shop, a 25,000 square foot climate controlled coating shop, and an 11 acre laydown yard. We provide in house steel detailing, fabrication, coatings, modular assembly, field installation, millwrighting, and construction services to clients across North America.
With work lined up into 2028, our team is supporting major projects across the nuclear, petrochemical, mining, data centre, defence, automotive, food and beverage, and infrastructure sectors.
We are looking for an experienced Senior Structural Steel Estimator who understands how steel is detailed, procured, fabricated, coated, shipped, and erected.
The Role The Senior Structural Steel Estimator will be responsible for developing complete, accurate, and competitive estimates for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, modular assemblies, coatings, and field installation projects.
This is a senior position for someone who can look beyond tonnage and material pricing. The right person understands fabrication hours, connection complexity, welding requirements, quality obligations, coatings, logistics, erection conditions, schedule risk, and the small details that can determine whether a project succeeds.
You will work closely with clients, suppliers, subcontractors, project managers, detailing, production, quality, coatings, and field operations to ensure every estimate reflects how the work will actually be executed.
Responsibilities
- Review bid invitations, drawings, specifications, addenda, schedules, contracts, and client requirements
- Complete detailed quantity takeoffs for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, plate work, supports, platforms, stairs, ladders, handrails, and modular assemblies
- Develop accurate material, labour, equipment, coating, freight, subcontractor, and field installation costs
- Estimate fabrication hours based on connection types, weld requirements, material handling, processing, fit up, assembly, inspection, and project complexity
- Evaluate the impact of material grades, testing requirements, traceability, tolerances, quality plans, inspection points,
and turnover documentation
- Identify scope gaps, drawing conflicts, constructibility concerns, commercial risks, and unclear requirements before bid submission
- Prepare RFIs and obtain clarification from clients, engineers, suppliers, and subcontractors
- Solicit, review, level, and incorporate supplier and subcontractor quotations
- Review material availability, current pricing, lead times, and market conditions
- Develop execution strategies with operations, detailing, coatings, quality, and field leadership
- Assess fabrication capacity, project schedule requirements, shipping sequences, site access, crane needs, and erection conditions
- Prepare complete estimates, bid summaries, proposal letters, qualifications, exclusions, alternates, and supporting documentation
- Participate in internal estimate reviews and provide clear recommendations on pricing, risk, schedule, and commercial strategy
- Support client meetings, site visits, prebid meetings, and scope reviews when required
- Manage multiple estimates and deadlines while maintaining accuracy and organization
- Maintain clear records of takeoffs, quotations, assumptions, correspondence, and pricing decisions
- Complete detailed project handoffs to project management and operations following award
- Compare estimated costs against actual project performance and use the findings to improve future estimates
- Help develop and maintain labour factors, production rates, material databases, estimating templates, and historical cost information
- Support and mentor junior estimators while helping strengthen consistency across the estimating team
- Build strong relationships with clients, suppliers, subcontractors, and industry partners
- Follow all ProMart quality, safety, confidentiality, and commercial requirements
Qualifications
- Significant structural steel estimating experience, with seven or more years preferred
- Strong understanding of structural steel and miscellaneous metals fabrication
- Experience estimating complete supply, fabrication, coatings, delivery,
and erection scopes
- Ability to read and interpret structural, architectural, mechanical, civil, and engineering drawings
- Strong knowledge of steel shapes, plate, connections, welding, bolting, coatings, material handling, shipping, and erection methods
- Ability to develop realistic fabrication and field labour hours based on the actual work required
- Experience reviewing contracts, specifications, schedules, quality requirements, and commercial terms
- Strong working knowledge of CSA, CWB, CISC, and AISC requirements and industry practices
- Experience estimating industrial, nuclear, mining, infrastructure, data centre, or other complex steel projects is a strong asset
- Proficiency with digital takeoff tools, estimating software, Microsoft Excel, and document management systems
- Strong mathematical, analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Robust commercial judgement and the confidence to identify risk, challenge assumptions, and recommend the right approach
- Ability to manage multiple opportunities and deadlines without sacrificing accuracy
- Experience mentoring junior estimators or leading estimate reviews is an asset
- A diploma, degree, or trade background in construction, engineering technology, fabrication, or a related discipline is an asset
