Role Summary The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and safety inspections on heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and/or coach vehicles. This role ensures all fleet assets are reliable, safe, and compliant with Ontario regulations and company standards. The ideal candidate is a safety-first technician with robust diagnostic skills, a solid understanding of diesel systems, and a proactive approach to maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
Preventative Maintenance
- Perform on demand and as required services on heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and related equipment.
- Inspect vehicles for mechanical, electrical, and safety issues; recommend corrective actions.
- Complete lubrication, fluid checks/changes, filters, and wear component replacements.
- Maintain accurate repair work orders.
Diagnostics & Repairs
- Diagnose and repair engine, drivetrain, brake, steering, suspension, electrical, and HVAC systems.
- Troubleshoot complex issues using OEM software, scan tools, and electrical diagnostic equipment.
- Perform breakdown support and prioritize repairs to minimize downtime.
- Conduct road tests to verify repairs and ensure safe operating condition.
Safety & Compliance
- Maintain clean, organized work areas and follow all lockout/tagout and PPE requirements.
- Identify and report safety hazards or recurring mechanical failures.
Documentation & Communication
- Create detailed work orders including findings, repairs completed, parts used, and recommendations.
- Communicate vehicle status and repair timelines to supervisors and operations teams.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce repeat failures and improve fleet reliability.
Shop & Team Support
- Mentor apprentices and support training of junior technicians.
- Assist with inventory control, parts ordering, and tool/equipment upkeep.
- Participate in after-hours/on-call rotation when required.
Required Qualifications
- 1+ years experience working on heavy-duty trucks and/or trailers (fleet or dealership).
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, air brake systems, hydraulics, and electrical diagnostics.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, OEM manuals, and service bulletins.
- Own tools suitable for heavy-duty repair work.
- Valid G-class driver’s license.
- Physically able to lift up to [50 lbs], work in varied positions, and perform shop/field repairs.
Preferred Qualifications / Assets
- Experience with [specific brands: e.g., Freightliner, Peterbilt, Volvo, Mack, International, Kenworth] an asset.
- Welding/fabrication skills an asset.
- Experience with [hydrovac units / vacuum trucks / roll-offs / tanker / lowboys / vocational equipment] an asset.
- Familiarity with fleet maintenance systems and KPI-based reliability programs an asset.

Working Conditions

Job Type: Full-time Pay: $35.00-$55.00 per hour
