Shop Technician

Overview

Lights Unlimited is looking for a reliable, organized, and hands-on Shop Technician to join our operations team for a full-time term position from September to December.

Lights Unlimited creates outdoor lighting installations throughout Winnipeg and surrounding areas, including seasonal and holiday displays, tree lighting, festival installations, architectural lighting, and permanent Gemstone Lights.

The Shop Technician works behind the scenes to keep these projects moving. You’ll prepare and test lighting, assemble job-specific materials, stage upcoming jobs, receive and organize inventory, and make sure our installation crews have what they need before heading into the field. From time to time, you’ll also join crews on installation jobs.

Previous lighting experience is not required — training will be provided. We’re looking for someone who’s great with their hands, likes tinkering and figuring things out, takes pride in organization, and can work independently while still being part of a fast-moving team.

Requirements

- Full-time availability Monday to Friday, September to December, with some overtime and Saturdays required during the busy season.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and ability to drive company vehicles as required.
- Comfortable working on ladders and at heights.
- Physically capable of loading, unloading, carrying, and organizing lighting materials and equipment.
- Able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs., including while working from a ladder when required.
- Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including cold.
- Able to read and follow work orders, staging lists, instructions, and basic sketches.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Working cell phone with data capabilities.

Responsibilities

- Prepare lighting materials and equipment for upcoming installation jobs.
- Install bulbs into socket wire and cut and prepare socket wire as required.
- Test, troubleshoot, sort, label, and organize lighting and related materials.
- Assemble and prepare job-specific lighting components and supplies.
- Prepare Gemstone Lights components and materials for installation.
- Assist with basic repairs and preparation of decorations and lighting equipment.
- Review upcoming work orders and prepare staging lists and materials under the direction of the operations team.
- Ensure staged jobs are complete and materials are ready for field crews.
- Receive shipments, check incoming materials, unpack, label, organize, and put away inventory.
- Assist with inventory counts and maintain accurate inventory records as required.
- Sort, inspect, and return materials from completed jobs to their proper locations.
- Load and unload company vehicles, equipment, and materials.
- Drive company vehicles for pickups, deliveries, and other operational needs.
- Keep the shop, work areas, and company vehicles clean, safe, and organized.
- Assist with garbage, recycling, light snow clearing, and general shop upkeep.
- Join field crews on lighting installation jobs when required, including working from ladders.
- Follow all company health and safety procedures and use required PPE.
- Complete additional shop and operational tasks as required.

What We’re Looking For We’re especially interested in someone who:
- Has a positive, team-first attitude and strong work ethic.

- Is self-directed and takes initiative once they understand what needs to be done.
- Is mechanically inclined and enjoys hands-on work, tinkering, building, preparing, and problem-solving.
- Loves organizing materials and creating order in a busy workspace.
- Pays close attention to details and takes pride in getting things right.
- Can work independently without needing constant direction.
- Works well as part of an operations team and communicates when something isn’t clear.
- Is dependable and ready to work at the scheduled start time.
- Is willing and eager to learn recent skills.
- Enjoys a rapid-paced seasonal environment and is willing to put in additional hours when the busy season demands it.

Working Conditions This position involves a combination of indoor warehouse/shop work and outdoor work. The Shop Technician regularly moves between the shop, yard, vehicles, and outdoor work areas and may occasionally join crews at installation sites.

Our busiest season takes place during the fall and early winter, so candidates must be comfortable working in changing weather and temperatures, including cold, snow, rain, and muddy or dirty conditions.

This is a full-time seasonal position from September to December, primarily Monday to Friday, with some overtime and Saturday work required during busier periods.

Reporting The Shop Technician is part of the Operations team and reports to the Operations Manager.

If you’re someone who likes working with your hands, solving practical problems, staying organized, and seeing the results of your work come to life in lighting installations across the city, we’d love to hear from you.

To apply, send your resume and cover letter to [email protected].
