Kinship Childcare Worker

Big Island Lake Cree Nation (BILCN) is strongly committed to building a comprehensive Prevention and Protection program to keep BILCN children and youth connected to their families, community and culture. We are currently looking to hire a community-based Kinship Childcare Worker who will play a critical role to ensure that BILCN children in care remain safe, maintain family connections and are supported within their community.

The Kinship Childcare

Worker will partner with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Social Services (MSS) Child Protection Workers and support their work to ensure safety of children in care and strengthen caregiver placements with supports to maintain child placements with culturally grounded, stable, and nurturing environments where the children can thrive.

What are the functions of the job?

The Kinship Childcare Worker will partner with the MSS Child Protection Workers to support children who have already been placed in caregiver homes with the following key responsibilities:

· Support the BILCN caregivers to maintain the child placement in a safe and supportive environment and provide ongoing guidance and support to caregivers.

· Educate and support caregivers on requirements to meet safety standards.

· Meet regularly with the children in care to assess emotional, social, developmental, safety and well-being needs within the placement.

· Promote age-appropriate development and well-being of children in care and advocate for services that support healthy child development.

· Build capacity in the BILCN community for child placements.

· Support MSS staff with home safety studies.

· Support MSS Child Protection Workers with case management of childcare placement files which may include responsibility for transferred or delegated cases. This will include:

- developing and maintaining case plans focused on child safety;
- monitoring child well-being and placement stability;




- maintaining accurate case documentation in accordance with legislation and program standards;
- participating in planning meetings, case conferences or court processes where needed.

· Other related support as needed by the Director, Prevention. What would make you successful in the job?

The successful candidate must be able to work independently and as a team player who can build trusting and lasting relationships. Other required knowledge and capabilities include:

· Knowledge of Saskatchewan Child and Family Services legislation and policies;

· Knowledge of Indigenous Services Canada Child and Family Services Program;

· Understanding of trauma-informed care;

· Knowledge of child development stages and needs;

· Understanding of family systems and dynamics;

· Knowledge of Indigenous history, including intergenerational trauma;

· Understanding of Indigenous cultural practices and community values;

· Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills;

· Ability to build trust and maintain confidentiality;

· Clear and respectful communication skills with cultural humility;

· Critical thinking and problem-solving skills;

· Ability to support and coach caregivers.

Typically, the knowledge and capabilities required to be successful in this role is achieved through the following:

· Bachelor of Social Work undergraduate degree (BSW) or Bachelor of Indigenous Social Work undergraduate degree (BISW), and

· Minimum of 2 years’ experience in:

- Child welfare and child protection;
- Foster care, kinship care, or family support roles;
- Case management; OR

· An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience.



Other factors to be successful in this role include:

· Work location: Big Island Lake Cree Nation Band Office near Pierceland, Saskatchewan. Therefore, the ability to live at, or near, Big Island Lake Cree Nation is essential.

· Flexible hours of work: typical office hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, however, this role may be required to work some evenings and weekends. Flexibility will be provided in consideration of these work requirements.

· Travel requirements: travel may be required to administer and facilitate the child protection work. Therefore, a valid Class 5 driver’s license is required.

· Background checks: a successful criminal record check and a successful vulnerable sector check will need to be provided.
