Social Worker - Long Term Assignment

Job Function To work with students, families, school staff and communities to support students to optimize their learning, achievement and well-being. To honour diversity, different ways of knowing and help build an inclusive and secure environment for students, caregivers, families and staff.

Social workers are clinically supervised by the board Mental Health Lead, and fall under the management of the Board Psychologist/Manager of Student Services.

Perform the following duties

- Provide consultation services to administration, school staff and liaise with community partners to support positive mental health and the ability to learn for all students.
- Provide evidence-based individual counselling, assessment and support for students presenting with a range of learning, behavioural, and mental health challenges, while following and reinforcing current service delivery models.
- Provide suicide risk assessment and intervention, in response to reports of students presenting with suicidal ideation and risk, communicating suicidal gestures

or statements. This work includes supporting the board Suicide Prevention and Intervention Protocol, in addition to the Postvention Protocol.
- Maintain clinical records in accordance with board/department policies and procedures in accordance to, at minimum, standards outlined by PHIPPA and the College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
- Conduct themselves in accordance with consent laws as governed by the applicable governing college (i.e., Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers) and the Ministry of Education.
- Contribute to the delivery of culturally relevant, experiential, and holistic learning opportunities through working with Central Board teams (Consultants, Itinerants, Superintendents) who focus on supporting the cultural, social and emotional success of Indigenous students and other equity seeking groups.
- Support and implement student-centred,



trauma-informed strategies for the purpose of supporting student wellness and safety.
- Support Safe School programming, Violent Threat Risk Processes as directed/assigned.
- Be a member of the Crisis Response Team, where during times of crisis they will support administration, school staff, students and families.
- Work directly with superintendents of schools and administration with respect to aspects of consultation, counselling, parent/guardian and educational staff meetings, crisis intervention, support of Special Education Tiered Model of Support, and links with community agencies.
- Adhere to any Board policies and procedures as they relate to the position of social worker.
- Under the direction of the Board, develop and provide information, resources and in-service presentations (e.g., professional development) for staff, Catholic school council, parent groups and community groups to raise awareness and ensure education of pertinent current subjects, including supporting student mental health promotion activities.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

- A Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and/or Masters of Social Work (MSW) is required along with registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
- Proven judgment, discretion and boundaries in dealing with confidential and sensitive matters and the ability to respond appropriately with sound judgment to crisis situations, while seeking consultation as required.
- Demonstrated understanding of the many factors that influence a student’s life and behaviour, and how to support students’ academic success and social adjustment.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize mental health challenges and onset of mental illness, and make timely, appropriate referrals and provide outreach as needed.
- Demonstrated respect for individual, cultural, community and organizational diversity,



including the ability to identify and understand intersecting issues related to gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, race/ethnicity, immigration status, religion, Indigenous heritage and gender identity.
- Understanding and respect of Indigenous cultural knowledge, including traditional teachings and protocols of the region with respect to working with Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
- Formal training and education pertaining to indigenous studies is an asset.
- Two to three years demonstrated knowledge and experience in social work including experience with school based social work.
- Valid certification in Suicide Risk Assessment (ASIST) is an asset.
- Current certification in Behaviour Management Systems, First Aid, and CPR is an asset.
- Must demonstrate knowledge and ability to operate technology and office equipment such as computers, projectors and photocopiers.
- Proven abilities in effective communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as the ability to work cooperatively with students, Board personnel, parents, community agencies and organizations.
- Proven ability to manage student behaviours and provide appropriate support to meet student needs.
- Must have the ability to provide their own transportation in order to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
