Structural Steel Detailing Manager, SDS2

Location: Sarnia, Ontario

Position: Full time, permanent, on site

Salary: $82,000 to $100,000 per year, based on experience

About ProMart

ProMart Industrial is a third generation, family built structural steel fabricator and industrial contractor that has been operating in Sarnia since 1985.

Our facilities include an 80,000 square foot fabrication shop, a 25,000 square foot climate controlled coating shop, and an 11 acre laydown yard. We provide in house steel detailing, fabrication, coatings, modular assembly, field installation, millwrighting, and construction services to clients across North America.

With work lined up into 2028, our team is supporting major projects across the nuclear, petrochemical, mining, data centre, defence, automotive, food and beverage, and infrastructure sectors.

We are looking for an experienced Structural Steel Detailing Manager to lead our detailing department and help take ProMart into its next stage of growth.

The Role The Structural Steel Detailing Manager will be responsible for the people, priorities, quality, and overall performance of ProMart’s detailing department.

This is a working leadership position for someone who can manage a team while remaining close to the technical work. You will oversee projects from initial drawing review through modelling, approvals, fabrication release, CNC data generation, shipping sequences, and field erection support.

The right person understands that detailing drives the entire fabrication process. They know how to balance accuracy with schedule, identify problems early, support their team, and provide the shop and field with clear information they can build from confidently.

Responsibilities

- Lead the daily operations of ProMart’s structural steel detailing department
- Manage, mentor, and support detailers while building accountability, consistency, and pride within the team
- Assign projects, establish priorities, balance workloads, and monitor detailing schedules
- Coordinate detailing releases with procurement, fabrication, coatings, shipping, and erection requirements
- Review contract drawings, specifications, scopes of work, schedules, and project requirements before detailing begins
- Oversee the development of accurate 3D structural steel models using SDS2




- Review shop drawings, assembly drawings, part drawings, erection drawings, material lists, bolt lists, and fabrication reports
- Perform model and drawing checks for accuracy, completeness, constructibility, clashes, revision status, and compliance with project requirements
- Ensure connection details are completed in accordance with engineering requirements and applicable standards
- Oversee drawing submissions, approval comments, RFIs, revisions, design changes, and field measurement information
- Maintain strong document and revision control throughout the detailing process
- Ensure CNC data is accurate and properly coordinated with ProMart’s PythonX beamline, FICEP equipment, plasma plate beds, and Voortman V320
- Work directly with project managers, engineers, quality personnel, production leadership, coatings personnel, and field teams
- Resolve detailing and coordination issues before they affect fabrication or erection
- Develop and maintain ProMart’s SDS2 standards, templates, libraries, checking procedures, and detailing workflows
- Establish clear department standards for drawing quality, naming conventions, model organization, releases, and record keeping
- Track detailing progress, identify schedule risks, and communicate concerns early to project and operations leadership
- Support the recruitment, training, development, and performance management of detailing personnel
- Lead continuous improvement efforts based on shop feedback, field lessons learned, nonconformances, and project performance
- Help integrate new digital tools, AI supported drawing review, model coordination, and planning technology into ProMart’s detailing process
- Participate in project planning, production meetings, model reviews, and coordination meetings

Qualifications

- Extensive experience in structural steel detailing, with seven or more years preferred
- Previous experience leading, supervising, checking,



or mentoring a structural steel detailing team
- Advanced proficiency with SDS2 in a professional structural steel environment
- Strong experience producing and reviewing structural and miscellaneous steel models, shop drawings, and erection drawings
- Thorough understanding of structural steel fabrication, welding, bolting, coatings, shipping, and erection practices
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, and engineering drawings
- Strong working knowledge of applicable CSA, CWB, CISC, and AISC standards and detailing practices
- Experience managing drawing approvals, RFIs, revisions, changes, and Engineer of Record coordination
- Experience with CNC data and model to machine fabrication workflows
- Solid leadership skills and the ability to hold people accountable while developing and supporting the team
- Excellent organization, communication, scheduling, and problem solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and changing priorities in a busy fabrication setting
- Strong attention to detail and the confidence to raise concerns when information is incomplete or work does not meet requirements
- Experience supporting industrial, nuclear, mining, infrastructure, or other complex fabrication projects is an asset
- A diploma or degree in drafting, engineering technology, construction technology, or a related discipline is an asset
