Structured Literacy Tutor

Uncover Reading is a small, personal learning centre providing individualized structured literacy support for children and teens. We are building a thoughtful roster of tutors who are skilled, caring, and committed to helping learners become stronger, more confident readers.

We are looking for tutors to provide one-on-one reading and spelling instruction in students’ homes, at schools when arrangements permit, and online.

What You’ll Do

- Provide individualized structured literacy and reading support.
- Teach reading, spelling, phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and written language skills.
- Follow an explicit, systematic, multisensory approach.
- Build positive, encouraging relationships with learners.
- Adapt lessons to each student’s strengths, needs, and goals.
- Communicate professionally with parents and, when appropriate, teachers.
- Prepare individualized lessons and maintain brief progress notes.
- Participate in training and ongoing professional learning.

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in education, English, psychology, or a related field preferred.
- Experience teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or working with children.
- Strong English language and communication skills.
- Warm, patient, reliable, and comfortable adapting instruction.
- Ability to build trust with children and families.
- Orton-Gillingham or other structured literacy training is an asset.
- Experience supporting learners with Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism, or other learning needs is an asset.
- Online teaching experience is an asset.




- A clear criminal record check is required before working with families.
- Reliable transportation is required for in-person tutoring assignments.

Compensation and Schedule

- $30 per hour for tutoring and preparation time
- 15 minutes of paid preparation for each one-hour lesson
- Vacation pay in accordance with B.C. employment standards
- Statutory-holiday pay where eligibility requirements are met
- Part-time employee position, with approximately 4–10 hours per week initially
- Flexible scheduling, with most in-person lessons occurring after school
- Opportunities to grow with the learning centre as our student roster develops
- Paid Orton-Gillingham and structured literacy training will be provided as needed

Location In-person tutoring is available throughout Greater Victoria. Online tutoring is available across Canada.

You may be a strong fit if you are thoughtful, dependable, good with children, and excited by the process of helping a learner make progress. You do not need to arrive with Orton-Gillingham training; a willingness to learn and a genuine interest in literacy instruction are essential.
