POSITION TITLE: Summer Student Program-Laborer
DEPARTMENT: Westlock Regional Waste Management Commission Recycling Facility and Landfill
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Commission Manager, this employee would perform an operations position, responsible for the assistance of yard and facility maintenance. The applicant must be a current high school or post secondary student who will be returning in the fall of this year. They will assist full time staff in the maintenance of the facilities and yard, sorting recyclable materials, educating patrons on recycling programs, and directing patrons to appropriate areas of the facility.
The employee is expected to use a pleasant manner and sound judgement when interacting with the public and other staff of the WRWMC.
POSITION REPORTS TO: Commission Manager or their designate
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general direction of the Commission Manager and/or Team Leads, the employee is responsible for
· Learning department operations and how to carry out tasks and functions of the position, such as becoming oriented and familiar with all tools and equipment prior to use. Supervisory review may be required for certain tasks.
· Adhering to safety standards under the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Commission Policies and Procedures, and WHMIS & TDG guidelines.
· Maintaining storage compounds, the WRWMC yard site, Recycling Facility, and scale house.
· Sorting of commercial loads of recyclable materials.
· Operating small equipment, such as weed whackers and lawn mowers, used in the maintenance of the WRWMC site, roads, landfill, Recycling Facility, and scale house.
· Performing preventative maintenance, repairs,
and operation of small equipment and tools according to current practice under Safe Operating Procedures and/or as assigned by the Commission Manager/Team Leads.
· Performing manual Labour such as shoveling, lifting heavy objects, trimming brush & trees, and other duties required for yard/site maintenance.
· Reporting all damages and/or injuries to themselves, the public, other staff, and WRWMC property immediately to the Commission Manager and/or Team Leads and completing written incident report(s).
· Interacting with patrons and other WRWMC staff in a professional and effective manner, using a pleasant demeanor and sound judgement. Referring any complex inquires to the Team Leads and/or Commission Manager.
· Showing initiative by undertaking appropriate tasks without supervisory assignment, displaying a willingness to learn and be trained in new areas, and striving towards obtaining job experience.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Days and hours of work may vary depending on requirements of the WRWMC Facility and directives of the Commission Manager. A regular work week will consist of up to 40 hours per week; employees are expected to arrive on site 15 minutes prior to opening. Regular hours of operation are:
Tuesday to Friday 10am to 6pm
Saturday 9am to 5pm
Closed Sundays, Mondays,
and General/Statutory Holidays
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
· A valid Class 5 Driver’s License or access to your own transportation to the WRWMC site
· Provision of a Driver’s Abstract (if operating WRWMC vehicles).
· Minimum grade 10 education and a returning student
· Ability/willingness to work outdoors and in all types of weather conditions
· Physical ability to perform strenuous tasks and Labour
· Small equipment experience (i.e., lawn care equipment) is an asset
· Good interpersonal skills while working with coworkers, supervisors, and the public
Equivalencies may be considered.
Candidate selection will be held no later than August 31,2026 , by the Commission manager.
Selected candidates must complete an onboarding package prior to commencement of work, including review of the WRWMC Health & Safety manual and key policies directly related to the position being applied for.
