Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties

Transportation Maintenance Tech I

- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
- Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Transportation Maintenance Tech II In addition to the duties listed above
- Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
- Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.

Transportation Maintenance Tech III In addition to the duties listed above
- Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
- Trains other employees.
- Provides support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; and provides assistance to stranded motorists.
- Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.

Experience

- Transportation Maintenance Tech I: None Required
- Transportation Maintenance Tech II: 1 year of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.
- Transportation Maintenance Tech III: 2 years of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.

(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent) Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications

- Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- TMT I/II: Must have a Commercial Class "A"
- Driver's License with an "N"
- Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A”
- License with an "N" endorsement, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
- TMT III: Must have a Commercial Class "A"
- Driver's License with an "N"
- Endorsement at time of application.

- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
- Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
- Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment

Position Information The Hondo Maintenance Office is located in Medina county just west of San Antonio. Our Maintenance personnel are responsible for maintaining over 800 lane miles, including the major corridors on US 90 and IH 35. We use practices such as base repair, maintainer level up, pothole repair, sign/delineation maintenance, and other operations to keep state roadways safe for the traveling public. Annual Salary Ranges

Transportation Maintenance Technician I (A16) - $40,918 - $61,130

Transportation Maintenance Technician II (A17) - $42,976 - $64,469

Transportation Maintenance Technician III (A18) - $45,521 - $71,055
