ABOUT US: Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) is a registered non-profit charity located in Calgary, Alberta helping over 6,000 animals each year. Our mission is to rescue and rehome animals in need and provide community support programs that help people and their pets.

THE ROLE: AARCS Veterinary Hospital is a fast-paced, high volume clinic designed specifically to help rescued animals. Our team of experienced veterinarians, technicians, assistants and support staff ensure the animals are provided with the highest standard of medical care. The hospital is fully equipped allowing our team to perform a variety of treatments on a daily basis.

Reporting to the Director of Animal Health, the Veterinarian is responsible for leading and overseeing the medical care of all animals in AARCS' shelter system. This includes performing diagnostics, treatments, and surgeries, as well as supporting shelter medicine practices that promote the health and well-being of animals in our care.

ABOUT YOU: You thrive in a collaborative, rapid-paced environment and bring a compassionate, knowledgeable, and hands-on approach to veterinary care. With strong expertise in companion animal medicine, including surgery, diagnostics, treatment planning, and disease prevention, you help develop and implement high-quality shelter medicine protocols. You're confident in performing physical exams and other procedures, and are comfortable operating a wide range of medical equipment.

Details:

Shift: Flexible Schedule between Monday to Friday. 9 hours shifts with 1 hour unpaid break.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

- Genuine interest in animal welfare and shelter medicine.
- Animal handling experience required, including the ability and willingness to work with animals with behavioral issues.
- Maintain the highest standard of accuracy, professionalism and confidentiality.
- Diligent attention to detail, strong organizational abilities, and time management skills are required.
- Ability to work in a team environment with highly developed cooperation, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
- Emotionally resilient with the ability to handle stressful, demanding and changing situations.
- Commitment to continuing education and professional development.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

- Perform high volume sterilization surgeries and other surgical procedures for AARCS animals with a high level of proficiency and care.
- Examine animals and facilitate routing care such as vaccines and deworming.
- Perform or be willing to learn other surgical procedures such as amputations,



exploratory surgery, FHO’s, dental surgery, eye enucleation, etc.
- Assist with disease management and supervise care plans for animals in quarantine.
- Facilitate laboratory testing, and diagnostic imaging to diagnose and treat animals' medical conditions and execute care plans for extended medical cases.
- Ensure timely and accurate medical records.
- Assist the Director of Animal Health with oversight of Veterinary Technologists.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Animal Health and other team members to ensure a high level of animal care.
- Participate in bi-weekly rounds to discuss medical cases with the department Director and other veterinary colleagues.
- Other tasks as assigned.

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution
- Valid veterinary license to practice in Alberta
- Must be in good standing with the ABVMA
- Minimum 3 years surgical experience is preferred
- Experience in animal welfare/shelter environment is considered an asset

Other Requirements:

- Valid driver's license.
