MacEwan University is seeking a Lifeguard/Instructor for casual opportunities with our Sport and Wellness department. Reporting to the Aquatics Supervisor, you will ensure the safety of all patrons in and around the aquatic facility and provide high-quality aquatic program instruction to individuals of varying skill levels, playing a key role in maintaining and promoting an aquatic environment that is enjoyable, welcoming, educational, and safe.

Key responsibilities include:

Monitoring pool and surrounding areas to ensure the safety of all patrons, enforcing safety policies, protocols, and surveillance;

Addressing unsafe behaviours and educating patrons on safe behaviours and practices;

Responding to first aid, incidents, accidents, and other emergency situations, ensuring proper first aid and rescue protocols are followed, and that required documentation is completed;

Maintaining a clean and secure environment in and around the water for users by completing regular required maintenance tasks;

Inspecting and maintaining safety equipment and reporting any issues;





Supporting the Head Lifeguard/Instructor in completing daily operational checks and mechanical tasks;

Providing high-quality instruction of all assigned aquatic programs to patrons of all skill levels, including swimming lessons, private lessons, specialty programs, and aquatic fitness;

Completing lesson plans, report cards, worksheets, and attendance reports; and

Communicating with parents, guardians, or participants about progress and any concerns.

Skills
You will have:

Strong swimming ability and knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in water safety and lifesaving activities;

Knowledge of public health, safety and sanitary regulations and operational guidelines applicable to swimming pool operations;

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a commitment to customer service and the ability to work with a diverse range of clients;

A positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to maintain a proactive approach and work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team;

Excellent organizational, problem-solving and time management skills;

The ability to remain calm and make decisions quickly in high-pressure and stressful situations; and

A commitment to ongoing learning and skill development.

Qualifications

A minimum of a high school diploma, or working towards the completion of a high school diploma;

Certified in Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard (NL) and Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C and Automated External Defibrillator (AED), with the ability to renew annually or as required.

Certified in Lifesaving Society Swim and Lifesaving Instructor and Lifesaving Society Oxygen Administration or progressing towards certification with completion by your hire date.

Certification in advanced Lifesaving Society Leadership Courses like National Lifeguard Instructor, First Aid Instructor and Trainer would be considered an asset.

Pool Operator, AFLCA or other Aquatic Fitness training, and NCCP or Lifesaving Sport or Recreational Coach certifications would all be considered assets.





Aquatic experience as a lifeguard and instructor of Lifesaving Society programs is considered an asset.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Position Requirements

This position is on campus only.

Minimum age of 15 years old.

The ability to work flexible hours, which includes early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Work schedules may rotate from time to time and would not be consistent.

Required to attend training and events that could fall outside of normal working hours, with sufficient notice provided.

The successful incumbent will be required to obtain a Police Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check at their own cost.
