IPAC Lead

Starting Rate: $75,776 annually
Salary Range: $75,776 - $88,648 hourly
Status: Permanent full time
Union : Non Union
Hours of Work: 75 hours (10 shifts) in a two-week period.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Lead the education and continuous improvement of Infection Control Prevention and Control (IPAC) programs in the home, conduct monitoring, and act as liaison with Public Health for managing outbreaks for the assigned Long-Term Care Home.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (not limited to):
Facilitate a collaborative environment through role modelling and coordination of IPAC activities.
Stay current with emerging infection control research (in consultation with the Infection Control Committee) to improve and update infection control strategies with evidenced based, best practice and prevailing practices. Create, implement, evaluate and support approved initiatives.
Chair of the Infection Control Committee (ICC)
Oversee and coordinate immunization clinics, surveillance testing and tracking, within the home, confidentially collect and maintain staff’s personal health information as required.
Mentor and educate staff, residents and family members on hand hygiene, PPE, immunization programs, prevention measures, emerging information and current best practices related to IPAC.
Maintain programs such as screening, surveillance data collection and review, Mask Fit, testing, creatinine levels for Tamiflu dosing, etc.
Collaborate with appropriate stakeholders, such as Public Health, physicians, per guidelines/regulatory requirements, to report and monitor risks of communicable diseases and outbreaks, and maintain internal tracking.
Conduct post outbreak analysis and report for the ICC and Professional Advisory Committee (PAC).
Conducts audits of IPAC process/policy compliance, PPE compliance and donning/doffing, hand hygiene, and cleaning and disinfection procedures for shared medical equipment and shares data weekly for unit performance boards and monthly for leadership, ICC and Health & Safety Committee.
Create and distribute Daily IPAC report to leadership.
Assist in identifying the learning needs of staff related to IPAC programs, and collaborate to design overall learning strategies and interventions.
Maintain a positive image of the facility through ongoing communication with external contacts including families and volunteers. Proactively works with leadership and communication teams to share relevant information regarding IPAC risks and outbreaks.
Respond to emergencies as required.
Participate as a member of the nursing management team including on-call rotation, investigations, and discipline meetings.
Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
Two-year Registered Practical Nursing Diploma or equivalent.
IPAC Canada Certificate and IPAC Canada membership preferred; or willingness to enroll in IPAC Certificate course recommended by IPAC Canada and become a member.
2-3 years of related work experience
Solid understanding of the Fixing Long Term Care Act, Ministry of Long Term Care Directives, the Registered Health Professionals Act, Narcotic Control Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable legislation.
Knowledge of program planning, implementation, and evaluation
Proven ability to impact change through role-modelling and positive influence, along with an understanding of adult learning principles.
Excellent interpersonal skills for communicating with both internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated highly developed skills in leadership, team building, organizational development, customer service, written and oral communications and technological proficiency.
DECISION MAKING & INDEPENDENCE:
Ensure compliance with Fixing Long Term Care Act, related legislation and Department/Corporate policies and procedures.
Proficient with productivity related technology.
Safeguard Personal Health Information and Personal Information.
Interpret policies and procedures to inform decisions and escalates issues to appropriate supervisor/manager.
Program design and implementation.
Impact of errors could result in significant risks to resident and staff health.
Oversee outbreak mitigation and containment.
Identify efficiencies in processes - develop, communicate, implement, and evaluate process improvements to existing procedures and recommend continuous improvements to Director of Care.
Accountable for delivering program outcomes related to infection control and assigned projects
Support team members to resolve complex situations.
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Ensure appropriate utilization of supplies and equipment.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Supervise and direct work of nursing team members as part of Nursing On-Call Team.
Participate in leadership team meetings.
Identify training needs of nursing teams; implement training and continuous improvement
Conducts audits and coaches staff on required corrections.
CONTACTS:
Work directly with nursing team members, management and other District Home IPAC Leads.
Interact closely with residents, family members, Physicians, Consultants/Specialists, peers within Long Term Care field to share resources and best practices.
Contribute to a positive team environment.
PHYSICAL / PSYCOLOGICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS:
“Class C” facility, temperature controlled, smoke-free environment
Exposure to all resident care elements through regular resident contact, including responsive behaviours.
Mixture of time in an office environment, at a desk and on a computer, as well as standing and walking throughout home areas.
Follow proper lifting procedures and utilize mechanical lifts as required.
Working hours may include evenings and weekends.
Provide coverage to other District Long-Term Care homes.
On call responsibility for 24/7 support of nursing staff to respond to emergencies.
HEALTH & SAFETY RESPONSBILITIES:
Work in a safe manner that is in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and policies/ procedures of the District;
Ensure employees are familiar with the workplace hazards and controls;
Participate in training and ensure employees are adequately trained and are competent to perform the work;
Ensure that employees work in compliance with the Act and District health and safety policies and procedures;
Ensure the protective equipment, devices or clothing are maintained in good working order and used correctly.
