Are you a knowledgeable and collaborative occupational health and safety professional with public sector experience? The City is seeking an enthusiastic Occupational Health and Safety Advisor to join our small, but mighty team! Reporting to the Manager of Employee Services and Occupational Safety, this regular full-time position fulfills the City's occupational health and safety operational responsibilities. The ideal candidate will balance technical and strategic thinking with practical administrative skills, and a collaborative approach to change management and stakeholder engagement.
Responsibilities:
Undertake the administrative, technical, and operational tasks required to deliver the City's occupational health and safety programs
Serve as the primary health and safety resource and technical advisor for employees, supervisors, management, joint committees, and external stakeholders
Consult with departments and joint committees to identify risks, develop solutions, and promote safe work practices
Provide guidance on incident and injury reporting, support investigations and recommend appropriate follow-up actions
Compile and review health and safety statistics
Liaise with WorkSafeBC and support regulatory inspections, inquiries, and claims‑related matters as required
Lead the City's occupational first aid program, including providing guidance to designated workplace first aid attendants
Identify safety training needs and coordinate appropriate internal and external training programs and safe work procedures
Assist with the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of safety policies, programs,
and procedures to ensure legislative and regulatory compliance
Maintain accurate records, databases, reports, and documentation related to occupational health and safety activities and training, including the collection and retention of applicable data
Qualifications:
Completion of BCIT Occupational Health & Safety Diploma or equivalent
A minimum of two years of experience, including experience in a municipal environment developing corporate health and safety policies and procedures as well as experience with WorkSafeBC inspections and incident investigations, conducting workplace risk assessments, and developing and implementing safety programs and processes
Knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements
Familiarity with Collective Agreements and employment legislation is an asset
Proficiency with MS Office; experience with ERP and HRIS systems is an asset
Self‑motivated and resourceful team player, with a solid commitment to customer service
Discretion in dealing with confidential matters
Good judgement and decision‑making skills
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
Organized, with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
