CONTROLLER – MULTI-UNIT RETAILER
Toronto, Ontario
Full-time, 100 percent on-site. This is not a hybrid or remote position

COMPENSATION
$90K to $110K, commensurate with experience. Plus discretionary yearly bonus.

THE OPPORTUNITY
A well-established retailer with its Head Office in Toronto is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Controller to join its finance team.

The organization employs more than 200 people and operates through multiple retail locations.

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will support financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, management reporting, payroll, and business analysis across the organization’s locations.

This is a hands-on position requiring strong accounting capabilities, advanced Microsoft Excel skills, and direct experience processing and reviewing payroll. The successful candidate will also supervise an accounts payable employee and work collaboratively with operations, management, and other members of the accounting team.

The position is particularly suited to a resourceful accounting professional who enjoys combining detailed financial work with analysis, reporting, process improvement, and business support in a multi-location environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepare monthly financial reports, management dashboards, and performance analyses

Develop and maintain annual budgets, financial forecasts, cash-flow projections, and financial models

Analyze financial results and identify important trends, risks, opportunities, and areas requiring management attention

Present findings and practical recommendations to the Chief Financial Officer and other members of management

Monitor actual results against budgets and forecasts

Investigate significant variances and support cost-control and optimization initiatives

Assist with monthly and year-end financial close activities

Prepare and review account reconciliations for multiple business locations

Take direct responsibility for payroll processing and review, including payroll reconciliations, government remittances, and year-end reporting

Help ensure compliance with payroll, income tax, GST/HST, and other government reporting requirements

Support external audits, inventory reviews, and the maintenance of effective internal controls

Track project expenditures and evaluate the financial performance of business initiatives

Review corporate credit-card transactions and investigate unusual items, errors, or other financial discrepancies

Assist with insurance administration, investment reporting, and special financial projects





Supervise the accounts payable function and provide guidance to the accounts payable employee

Collaborate with members of the accounting and operations teams to improve financial procedures, reporting practices, and the quality of financial information

Develop and maintain advanced Microsoft Excel reports, analytical tools, financial models, and management schedules

Provide financial and analytical support to the Chief Financial Officer as required

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should possess:

A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline

Approximately three to five years of progressive experience in accounting, financial analysis, financial planning and analysis, or a related finance position

Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial modelling

Substantial hands‑on payroll processing and payroll review experience

Experience preparing payroll remittances, reconciliations, and year-end reports

Experience working with accounting requirements across multiple business locations

Experience with QuickBooks Online

Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving abilities

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

The ability to work effectively with the Chief Financial Officer, operational leaders, and cross-functional teams

A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail

The ability to organize competing priorities and consistently meet deadlines

The judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness required to work independently

Experience in retail, multi-location operations, or another transaction-intensive business would be an asset.

A professional accounting designation or progress toward one would also be an asset.

TECHNOLOGY AND SYSTEMS EXPERIENCE
The Controller must be highly proficient with spreadsheets, accounting applications, payroll systems, and financial‑reporting tools.

Candidates should offer:

Advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities, including the ability to develop and maintain detailed reports, analytical schedules, and financial models

Practical experience with QuickBooks Online

Hands‑on experience using payroll and workforce‑management systems

The ability to extract, organize, review, and interpret financial information from multiple sources

Experience using technology to improve reporting accuracy, efficiency, and accessibility

Experience with Rise payroll software is desirable. Candidates with strong experience using comparable Canadian payroll systems will also be considered.
