room to shape your career as the agency continues to scale.
About the Role
This role is a contract role with an expected duration of 12-14 months. The Lead Creative Technologist role requires a technically grounded, highly collaborative leader who can translate creative ambition into scalable web solutions, manage technical resourcing in cooperation with the Operations team, plan and guide web architecture, and support client-facing technical discussions.
The position leads technical delivery across projects, overseeing internal and contract development resources, and partner closely with Creative, Operations (PMs + resourcing) and Client Partnerships to ensure effective project coverage, clear communication, and successful outcomes. Focused on providing high quality innovative web code, the role will also have experience with various technology stacks and content management systems. The role will work with operations, UX/UI, QA and client technology staff to successfully develop and maintain mobile/desktop web solutions.
Responsibilities
- Manage technical resourcing and capacity planning in cooperation with Operations across internal and contract teams, ensuring the right skillsets are assigned to the right work and delivery stays on track.
- Partner with creative/project leads to define scope and deliverables, provide development estimates, identifying risks and tradeoffs early in the process.
- Define architecture solutions to address client needs and set implementation patterns/standards/plans for the team.
- Join key client discussions to explain feasibility, approach, timelines, constraints, and options in clear, non-jargony terms - supporting confidence and decision-making.
- Set and maintain standards for code quality, maintainability, performance, and consistency; lead code reviews and define “definition of done” in partnership with QA and project leadership (Includes performance expectations for high-traffic experiences).
- Contribute code when needed (high-complexity items, spikes/prototypes, urgent delivery moments, or when team load requires) to unblock teams and maintain momentum.
- Support pitches/proposals with technical strategy, approach, resourcing plan, estimates, and clear explanations of how the build will succeed.
- Review technical delivery where required from the development team,
ensuring solutions align with agreed scope, architecture, and quality standards.
- Leads by example in exploring and integrating AI-assisted development tools, fostering a culture of innovation while maintaining high standards for code quality and security.
- Collaborate closely with Operations (PMs + resourcing leads) to ensure project coverage, task allocation, timelines, and delivery workflows are practical and well-sequenced.
- Collaborate with Client Partnerships to help lead solutions discussions, communicate progress, manage technical expectations, and support client confidence throughout delivery.
- Utilize critical thinking, industry movements, and knowledge of client goals/needs to see opportunities that support client KPIs and goals, and work with Client Partnerships to pitch new work or scopes.
- Participate in (and guide) design reviews to ensure creative intent is achievable within timelines/budgets and to surface technical considerations early.
- Support design-to-development translation by helping teams implement templates and shared front-end guidelines when relevant to delivery.
- Ensure strong engineering hygiene by maintaining project artifacts and enforcing consistent use of repositories/source control, and peer-review across internal and contractor work.
- Drive cross-functional collaboration with producers, design, QA, and (when applicable) client technology stakeholders to deliver maintainable mobile/desktop web solutions.
- Mentor and level-up the team through coaching, employee reviews, code review feedback, and sharing patterns/approaches that improve delivery speed and quality.
Success Metrics
- Delivery health: Projects ship on time with predictable delivery, minimal last-minute scope surprises, and clear technical plans/estimates.
- Quality and stability: Low defect rates in QA, fewer regressions, consistent code standards, and transparent “definition of done” adherence.
- Architecture effectiveness: Solutions meet client needs, scale appropriately, and reduce rework through clear patterns and sound technical choices.
- Performance outcomes: Sites/applications meet performance expectations (especially for high-traffic moments) and maintain strong user experience.
- Team efficiency: Resourcing is balanced, contractors are productive quickly,
and team throughput improves over time.
- Client confidence: Client stakeholders understand the technical approach and feel supported in decisions; fewer escalations and smoother delivery communications.
- Pitch effectiveness: Technical approach and estimates improve win readiness and reduce downstream delivery risk.
Qualifications
- Strong ability to scope projects, estimate development effort, and communicate risks/tradeoffs.
- Demonstrated experience designing web solution architecture to meet client needs.
- Proficiency across modern front-end fundamentals (HTML/CSS/JS) and comfort supporting full-stack needs when required; familiarity with common CMS ecosystems.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Solid source control and delivery practices; ability to enforce repo hygiene and documentation standards.
- Experience with performance optimization for high-traffic websites and modern responsive engagement patterns.
- Strong knowledge of auxiliary compliances, such as privacy policy/cookie implementations (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, etc), WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility compliance, analytics implementations and interpretations, and safe practices around personally identifying information.
- Experience partnering with client services/account teams in an agency environment.
