BASICFUNCTION TheHealthandSafetySpecialist,undertheleadershipoftheManagerofHealthandSafety,isresponsibleforthedevelopmentoftheCounty’sHealthandSafetyprogrammeandassociatedimplementationplan.ThisinvolvescollaborationwithvariousstakeholderstodevelopCountypoliciesandconsultandadviseondepartment-specificstandardoperatingproceduresandguidelinestoensuretheCountymeetsallHealthand Safetylegislativeandindustrystandards.ThispositioniskeyinassistingtheCountyofWellingtontofosteraphysicallyandpsychologicallysafeworkplacethroughthecontinuousimprovementofHealthandSafetyandrelatedinitiatives.

PRINCIPALRESPONSIBILITIES

PlayakeyroleinthedesignandimplementationofthehealthandsafetyprogrammeandbearesourcetotheCounty’semployees,leadership,employeegroups,andJointHealthandSafetyCommitteeswiththeobjectiveofensuringlegislativecompliance,prevailingbestpractice,minimizingtheriskofoccupationalinjury/illness,andsupportingapositivesafetyculture.





Develop,implementandmaintaintheCounty’sHealthand Safetypolicies,procedures,trainingprogrammesinamannerthatadherestoapplicablelegislationandbestpractice.

Provideguidancetodivisionsintheirdevelopmentand/orimprovementofsafeworkprocedures(e.g.,standardoperatingprocedures).

Deliverexpertadviceandguidancetosupervisorsonmattersrelatingtoworkplacephysicalandpsychologicalhealthandsafety,andrelatedemployeesupportstoensureahealthyandsafeworkplaceandcompliancewiththeoccupationalhealthandsafetyactandapplicableregulations.

LeadtheexecutionofHealthandSafetyprojectsandinitiativesasassignedonvarioustopicsfromplanningtoimplementation.

AssistinthedevelopmentofHealth,Safetytrainingprogramming,identifyingtrainingneeds,developing,facilitatingvarioustrainingprogramsandcoordinatingwithqualifiedexternaltrainingproviders.

Conductcorporatehealthandsafetytrainingasneeded.

DevelopandimplementaninternalassessmentprogrammeformonitoringtheexecutionofthehealthandsafetyprogrammewithintheCountyofWellingtondepartments.

ReceiveCountyofWellingtonincidentreports,ensuretimelydistributiontostakeholders,andconductfollowupasrequired.

ReportsaccidentstoWSIBandrefersapplicablecasestoDisabilityManagementforthecoordinationofyearlyandsafereturntowork.

OverseesthetrackingofWSIBstatisticsandpreparesrequiredreportsformanagementandtheJHSC’s.

MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS

Two-yearcollegediplomainhumanresources,healthsciencesorarelatedarea.

CertificateinHealthandSafetyorarelatedareaorwillingnesstoobtain.

ACanadianRegisteredSafetyProfessional(CRSP)designation,CanadianRegisteredSafetyTechnician(CRST)orCertifiedDisabilityManagementProfessional(CDMP)designationisconsideredanasset.
