Stantec is recruiting an Archaeology Field Supervisor for the 2026 field season (anticipated start date March 2026) based in our Hamilton/Stoney Creek office.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise field teams across Ontario.
- Supervise and perform archaeological assessments and mitigations using approved field methodologies, including survey, testing, excavation, surface collection, and monitoring.
- Quality‑control fieldwork and data, ensuring compliance with the MCM Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists.
- Lead and motivate the field team to achieve productivity goals.
- Adapt to changing project, equipment, and personnel requirements.
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety policies and Stantec’s HSSE program.
- Collaborate with senior technical advisors, Project Managers, and Task Managers to deliver high‑quality products.
- Assist senior technical advisors in developing advanced technical methods, documents, and tools.
- Work with Indigenous communities to develop and maintain mutual trust, respect, and collaboration.
- Travel within Ontario and occasionally overnight stays.
Qualifications – Capabilities and Credentials
- Proficient application of MCM’s Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists and associated Technical Bulletins.
- Knowledge of Indigenous and Euro‑Canadian archaeological resources and artifacts, including stratigraphy, cultural features, and settlement patterns.
- Experience with ArcGIS and other digital data applications, transit, and total stations.
- Prepare and maintain detailed field notes, drawings, and maps.
- Understand MCM reporting requirements.
- Strong leadership and motivation skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Team player and capable of working independently when required.
- Familiarity with HSSE policies and procedures.
- Willingness to learn new skills.
- Organized, disciplined, goal‑oriented.
- Ability to perform rigorous physical activities such as lifting up to 50 lbs under adverse weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license and positive driving record.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in archaeology or related field (cultural resources, heritage, anthropology).
- Research License in good standing with the MCM.
- At least one year of proven field experience (Stage 1‑4 AA) as an Archaeology Field Supervisor in Ontario; higher experience preferred.
- Experience directing Stage 3 assessment and Stage 4 excavation valued.
Wages
Hourly wage ranges from $32.22 to $38.47, depending on the number of complete field seasons of experience in the Cultural Resource Management sector.
Schedule & Travel
- Full‑time role.
- Travel within Ontario required; overnight stays may be necessary.
