Applicants are encouraged to self-identify on their electronic application.Under the direction of the Supervisor, the mechanic will be accountable to perform maintenance work on the Police Fleet. The successful candidate must be able and willing to move to another work location should the employer deem it necessary. The incumbent would be subject to noise, odours, grease and dirt associated with a garage environment. The primary work location is 1975 Gottingen Street, Halifax.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESDiagnose, determine the source and extent of, and carry out the necessary repairs to all types of equipment, diesel/gas, and hydraulic equipment contained in a major municipal fleet operationMust be willing to accept necessary training in related coursesTo continuously take necessary training to successfully pass and stay current on Emergency Vehicle Technician LevelsMaintain a safe and healthy workplace, per the Occupational Health and Safety regulationsMust have a good working knowledge of PreventativeMaintenance and how it pertains to a fleet operationComplete and maintain electronic work orders and necessary records, as requiredQUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience:Completion of Grade 12, or equivalent education and experienceMust possess a valid NS Journeyman Mechanic's License in Automotive Service TechnicianMust have a minimum of three (3) years' experience in the repair and maintenance of Fleet vehicles (in municipal operation would be an asset)Working knowledge of Harley Davidson Motorcycles, an assetWorking knowledge of emergency lighting systems, an assetWelding ability and the ability to use acetylene torches, an assetMust have a good attendance and work recordMust possess a valid Class 5 N.S. drivers' license,
with a good driving record (a current Driver's Abstract will be required before appointment)Must have own hand toolsMust be available to work in emergency situationsSecurity Clearance Requirements:Candidates being considered for the position of Fleets Trades Person Emergency Fleet must successfully meet the security clearance requirements administered by Halifax Regional Police.Candidates must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position and have valid licensing, as required.Please note -Applicants are responsible to include all information that they wish to have taken into consideration in the review of their application, and applicants are required to provide full details of experience or training referenced in the posting. HRM provides some specialized tools that are shared amongst employees, when required.Safety EquipmentEmployees are provided all required safety equipment including, but not limited to, footwear and coveralls.Sick Leave BenefitsEmployees accrue sick leave benefits throughout their employment which enable them to receive paid sick leave through illness, injury or accident where other payment is not received under the Workers' Compensation Act, for periods that their accrual supports.This is a bargaining unit position.
