Overview
Adastra is seeking a Database Administrator (DBA) to manage, optimize, and support enterprise database environments across development, staging, and production systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for database performance, availability, security, backup and recovery processes, and operational support. This role requires robust troubleshooting abilities, a proactive approach to database management, and experience supporting mission‑critical systems in fast‑paced environments.

Primary Location: Toronto, ON

Work Model: Hybrid 2‑Days Onsite

Employment Type: Full‑Time or Contractor

Vacancy Status: New

Compensation Range: $70,000 - $85,000 CAD

Responsibilities

Install, configure, administer, and maintain database environments across development, staging, and production

Monitor database health and performance, proactively identifying and resolving bottlenecks through optimization of queries, indexes, and configurations

Design, implement, and regularly test backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies

Manage database security, including user access, permissions, encryption, and compliance with data protection standards

Plan and execute database upgrades, patching, and migrations while minimizing business disruption

Implement and maintain high availability and failover solutions, including clustering, replication, mirroring, and log shipping

Troubleshoot and resolve database incidents, conducting root cause analysis and implementing preventative measures

Perform capacity planning and forecasting to support future storage, performance, and scalability requirements

Partner with development teams on schema design, data modeling, and query optimization best practices

Automate routine database administration tasks, including backups, health monitoring, and maintenance activities

Maintain database architecture documentation, configurations, and operational procedures

Provide guidance and knowledge sharing on database administration best practices





Participate in on‑call support for critical production systems as required

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Proven experience as a Database Administrator supporting enterprise production environments

Strong experience administering relational database platforms such as SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar technologies

Expertise in database performance tuning, query optimization, indexing strategies, and troubleshooting

Hands‑on experience with backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions

Experience managing database security, access controls, encryption, and compliance requirements

Experience planning and executing database upgrades, migrations, and patching activities

Strong understanding of database architecture, schema design, and data modeling principles

Experience with scripting and automation for database administration functions

Knowledge of monitoring, capacity planning, and database health management practices

Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and root cause analysis skills

Excellent communication and documentation skills

Ability to work effectively in cross‑functional teams and support critical production environments

NICE TO HAVE

Experience with cloud database platforms in Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud

Experience with containerized or cloud‑native database environments

Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and database automation tools

Experience supporting large‑scale data warehouse or analytics platforms

Experience within consulting or professional services environments
