The Machine Builder will build/assemble heavy duty material handling equipment, such as conveyors, stackers, lifts, carts, etc. Each machine is custom made. The Lead Machine Builder will assign the duties amongst the assembly team/machine builders. The MB must be able to read blueprints efficiently, assemble heavy duty conveyors, lifts, stackers, turntables, etc, according to the mechanical drawings. Constant communication and team effort is necessary with the Lead Machine Builder, the team of machine builders; additional communications may be necessary with the mechanical design engineers, and other shop personnel, such as welders and fabricators, controls engineers, and project managers. Travel inside the states is required to install completed products at customer sites.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Read, interpret, and correctly assemble complex automated equipment, from blueprints and schematics, into functioning equipment
Precisely build of complex assemblies
Troubleshoot mechanical issues
Effectively, and safely, operate hand and power tools, including, but not limited to: mills, lathes, drill press, saws, and shears, clamps, etc., daily
Fabricate parts when necessary
Communicate with team members, and the team Lead Builder, on project(s) progress
Maintain a clean and organized work area
Manage time and expectations across multiple projects
Disassemble finished product and prepare for shipment
Travel to customer locations to reassemble/rebuild our finished products
Travel up to 30% annually; sometimes up to a full week at a time
Required Skills/Abilities:
Mill, lathe, CNC mill, welding, brake press, laser, shear, and AutoCAD knowledge are a plus
Proven mechanical aptitude
Ability to function well in a fast-paced, and sometimes stressful, environment
Excellent attention to detail to ensure they are building machines according to blueprint.
Determine correct tools and parts for each machine to be built.
Understanding the importance of strict timelines
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills, along with a customer service mentality
Knowledge of common shop tools (hand tools, drilling and tapping, saw cutting, grinding, etc.)
Ability to work within a team environment, as well as successfully complete assigned independent tasks
Willingness to follow directions, and handle materials and equipment in a responsible manner
Adhere to established company policies and procedures paying special attention to safety regulations
Education and Experience:
Custom machine building, in the automation industry, highly preferred
Preferred trade school or college certification in machine building or related field
2+ years of experience with building large equipment preferred; metal fabrication shop environment experience highly beneficial
High school diploma or equivalent
Solid work history in a machine builder metal fabrication shop environment (neither production/fixture type fabrication, nor machine operator work duties qualify for this role)
Physical Requirements:
Positive dexterity to grasp, manipulate, and assemble parts and components that can be small, use hand tools
Prolonged periods of standing
Crawling over, around, or under equipment
Twisting, bending, turning, and reaching are common
Must be able to lift heavy materials, up to 50 pounds, or greater, at a time
