The Kitchener-Waterloo Library of Things (KWLOT) is a project created through Extend-A-Family Waterloo Region, and we have created a space for sharing items ranging from tools to camping and kitchen equipment. By sharing items, Library members save money, reduce waste, discover a strong community and provide inclusive and supported employment opportunities.

KWLOT is hiring a Senior Repair Technician to help lead the expansion of our community repair offerings which will include:
Repair Cafés
Member Fix-It Days
Drop-off repair services for the community
As an organization committed to equity and sustainability, we are seeking a candidate who brings both lived experience of disability and senior-level confidence to the hands-on repair work and leadership of this position.
Working alongside our Impact & Growth Coordinator, you will play a key role in establishing and developing our repair services with an entrepreneurial spirit. In addition to diagnosing and fixing a variety of common household goods (such as small appliances, electronics, and common household mechanical items), you will mentor our Junior Repair Technician and lead hands-on workshops that teach community members how to fix their own items.
This role is made possible by the support of Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Grow Grant.
Qualifications: Lived experience of disability




2+ Years of experience in professional repairs and/or maintenance
Entrepreneurial spirit with comfortability in collaboratively building new service offers
Ability to repair items while teaching/instructing others
Ability to diagnose technical issues and provide solutions
Robust problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Strong oral and written communication
Experience leading and mentoring others
Expert comfortability with the use of repair tools
Able to lift 40lb items onto/off of tables
Strong work ethic
Flexible and agile collaborator who works well in a team environment
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Post-secondary education or equivalent years of experience in repair, such as: Mechanical Technician, Automotive Mechanic, or Construction is an asset, but not a requirement
Core Competencies: Display Leading level competency which is defined as “coaching, mentoring, leading others and system level thinking. They demonstrate confidence in the application of the Competency which enables them to exercise it effectively and in various situations.”

Hours and Pay: 5 to 10 hours per week
Starting rate: $23.00 - $24.84 per hour plus 6% vacation pay
Approximately a one and a half (1.5) year contract, ending May 2028, with a goal of renewal beyond the grant period
In-person position,



with work to be completed onsite at the EAFWR office (located at 91 Moore Avenue in Kitchener) or a nearby location
Responsibilities and Functions: Reporting to the Impact & Growth Coordinator, the Senior Repair Technician will:
Repair Items:
Repair small electrical appliances, such as lawn and garden equipment and power tools
Consult customer or refer to work order to establish nature of the appliance malfunction
Refer to schematic drawings or product manuals and replace or repair parts or components using hand tools and soldering equipment
Diagnose technical issues, repair malfunctions, and replace parts as needed
Observe operation of appliance and conduct voltage, resistance and other tests using electrical test equipment
Provide customer service and advise customers on maintenance and equipment use.
Inspect devices or equipment for faults and damages
Test repaired equipment for proper functioning and ensure the job meets safety regulations
Clean and degrease tools and parts as required
Provide quality customer service and support customer knowledge of repairs
Maintain an organized and neat work environment
Repair Admin:
Keep records of repairs and maintenance for all equipment.
Prepare estimates and written accounts of work performed.
Stay up-to-date with industry standards and new technologies.
Order all necessary parts
Provide skill building and/or mentorship opportunities for repairing items
Be able to mentor/teach other repair technicians
Provide Support to KWLOT and EAFWR Administration by:
Support logistics of repair events
Support volunteer coordination for repair events
Maintain awareness of and adherence to relevant guidelines, policies and procedures.
Participate in training and staff development as requested/required.
Provide documents relevant to the position as requested by EAFWR.
Completing other duties as required
