The Law Society of Alberta (Law Society) regulates the legal profession in the public interest.

In alignment with the Law Society’s vision, mission, and strategic plan, the Accounting department provides the Boards of Directors (the Benchers), Committees (Audit and Finance), management and all business units with timely, accurate and meaningful financial information and advice to support effective strategic and operational decision making. The department is responsible for the accounting records of three distinct but related entities: The Law Society, the Alberta Lawyers Insurance Association (ALIA), and the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED).

The Accountant will work closely with the Manager, Finance and Accounting in the preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly and year-end accounting information to meet the financial information needs of all stakeholders. This includes the accounting records of all three entities.

Success in this position requires excellent attention to detail, sound knowledge of financial reporting, and effective organizational and communication skills.

Key Accountabilities
As a member of the Accounting team, you will:

Work closely with the Manager, Finance and Accounting to perform a variety of accounting tasks

Complete month-end working papers and prepare financial reporting for assigned entity or entities

Accurate recording of capital assets and leases

Prepare account reconciliations and related analysis, including deferred revenue and revenue recognition, intercompany funds, prepaids, and accrued liabilities

Monthly reconciliation of investments, including recording of transactions and recognition of unrealized gains

Ensure investment asset mix guidelines are maintained and followed





Assist with provision of documentation and analysis for the external auditors

Review accounts payable invoices for proper coding and approval

Prepare journal entries and perform related data entry as required

Complete assigned accounting tasks and projects in a professional and timely manner

Provide guidance and support to the Accounting Assistants and support for the AP & AR functions within the dept.

Support department managers and their financial reporting requests in a timely manner, providing sound information that meet their needs

Prepare GST returns and other forms as required

Other tasks and projects assigned

Qualifications

CPA designation

Strong accounting skills with a minimum of three years of related financial reporting and accounting experience

Self-starter with the ability to work independently to organize and prioritize numerous duties and responsibilities to meet required deadlines

Experience with Microsoft Business Central is considered an asset

Excellent computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

Demonstrated excellence in attention to detail while maintaining a big picture perspective

Solid customer service orientationli>Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

The ability to work in and promote a strong team environment

A desire for growth and capability to meet additional requirements added to this position over time

Able to work overtime during peak periods if required
