About the role
The Director of Care is fundamental to care-plan development and the delivery of care at their location. Working closely with the General Manager, the DOC ensures a person-centred approach that delivers protected, effective care. The successful candidate is passionate about clinical standards and will help develop and implement policies and procedures so the facility continuously meets Regional Health Authority and Accreditation Canada guidelines. The DOC builds openness, respect, and clinical excellence across the multidisciplinary team.
Key responsibilities
Hire and orient care staff, including Personal Care Attendants and Unlicensed Care Providers (Medication Administration).
Supervise, mentor, and coach the care team through ongoing training, education, performance audits, and reviews.
Complete departmental scheduling within the labour budget, submit to the GM for approval, and meet all deadlines.
Oversee the departmental supply budget and share rotating on-call and emergency coverage to maintain staffing standards.
Facilitate new resident admissions: review RHA referrals, build and update resident care plans, complete pharmacy paperwork and MCP change-of-address, and orient residents and families.
Coordinate with physicians, families, and the multidisciplinary team; participate actively in physicians' rounds and ensure accurate processing of new medical orders.
Lead clinical auditing: MAR checks, weekly med-cart audits,
quarterly medication-pass audits, and participate in the quarterly RHA audit.
Review incident reports and progress notes daily; update care plans and action plans to reduce risk.
Ensure accurate documentation and that all Operational Standards and RHA medication policies are met.
Champion resident satisfaction and continuous quality improvement.
Qualifications
Required
Current, unrestricted licence as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with the NL College of Nurses .
Demonstrated competency in medication administration , including delegation, eMAR, and medication-pass oversight.
Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, with multiple years in a leadership, supervisory, or charge role (long-term care or personal care home experience strongly preferred).
Strong working knowledge of clinical documentation, care planning, and audit/compliance processes.
Clear Certificate of Conduct including Vulnerable Sector Check, and required immunizations.
Considered an asset
Experience in a unionized environment and familiarity with collective agreements.
Experience with Log My Care, NxtGen, or similar clinical/EMR systems.
Supervisory/management training and a commitment to continuing professional development.
