The Barley Merchant Taproom & Kitchen | Langley, BC
We are an award-winning, independently owned, high-volume restaurant and taproom in North Langley.
A 200-seat operation built around genuine hospitality, a scratch kitchen and one of the most extensive selections of BC craft beer in the province. Our food program focuses on fresh ingredients and handcrafted preparation, while our beverage program proudly supports BC breweries, cideries, distilleries and wineries.
We are currently looking for an Assistant Manager to join our Front of House leadership team.
This is a hands-on restaurant management position. We are looking for someone who wants to be on the floor, working alongside the team, supporting our guests and helping create the kind of culture and consistency that makes a busy restaurant successful.
What you'll do:
As an Assistant Manager, you will work closely with our AGM and owner to:
- Lead busy Front of House shifts and support the team on the floor
- Deliver and reinforce a high standard of genuine hospitality
- Coach, develop and provide feedback to team members
- Conduct preshifts and communicate priorities clearly
- Support hiring, onboarding and training
- Manage guest concerns and recover difficult situations effectively
- Maintain high standards for cleanliness, organization and execution
- Monitor labour and make sound operational decisions throughout the shift
- Support opening, closing and cash-management procedures
- Help protect and strengthen a positive, accountable, team-first culture
- Identify opportunities to improve the operation rather than simply maintaining the status quo
Skills we're looking for: The ideal candidate will have:
- 2+ years of management or leadership experience in a high-volume, full-service restaurant
- Experience hiring, training, coaching and leading a team
- Strong communication, organization and supervisory skills
- High standards for hospitality, cleanliness and execution
- A hands-on work ethic and willingness to lead by example
- A basic understanding of restaurant financials, particularly labour and liquor cost
- The ability to remain organized and make good decisions in a fast-paced environment
- Comfort working with common business software including Google Workspace and Microsoft Office
- Availability for a combination of days, evenings, weekends and holidays
- Valid Serving It Right certification
Experience with FoodSafe, First Aid, TouchBistro, 7shifts or MarketMan would be an asset, but is not required. The person we're looking for:
Beyond experience, we're looking for someone who believes hospitality starts with how we treat people.
Someone who enjoys creating positive experiences for both guests and coworkers.
Someone who takes ownership rather than waiting to be asked.
Someone who understands that leadership means setting the standard, supporting the people around you and being willing to jump in wherever you're needed.
Someone who is curious, wants to continue developing as a leader and sees every shift as an opportunity to make the restaurant a little better.
An interest in BC craft beer and supporting independently owned local businesses is definitely an asset.
Why The Barley Merchant?
We believe there is a better way to build a career in hospitality.
We are an independent, owner-operated restaurant with a hands-on owner and senior leadership team who are present in the business and genuinely care about the people who work here. Decisions aren't being made from a distant corporate office, and our managers aren't left carrying the operation for absentee ownership.
We want The Barley Merchant to be a place where people can do work they are proud of, develop as leaders, enjoy the people they work alongside and look back on their time with us as a genuinely positive part of their career.
That philosophy shows up in some very practical ways.
A genuine 40-hour work week.
Our salaried managers are scheduled for 40 hours per week with no expectation that they routinely work beyond those 40 hours simply because they are salaried.
Paid statutory holidays.
Our salaried managers receive paid statutory holidays, either with the holiday off or with a paid day in lieu when the needs of the restaurant require them to work the statutory holiday.
Hands-on, accessible ownership.
Our owner is actively involved in the day-to-day business. Managers have direct access to the people making decisions, support when they need it and a genuine opportunity to influence how the restaurant operates.
A strong team & culture.
We put significant effort into creating an environment built around kindness, accountability, communication and supporting one another. We expect a lot from our leaders, but we also believe the business has an obligation to support them.
An opportunity to grow.
We want managers who are interested in becoming stronger operators and better leaders, and we actively develop people who want to take on greater responsibility within the business.
Compensation
Base salary: $45,000–$48,000 annually, depending on experience.
In addition to base salary, our management compensation package currently includes:
- Weekly team tip share estimated at approximately $11,000 annually
- Quarterly performance bonus prospect of up to $4,000 annually
- 40-hour salaried work week with no expectation of routinely working additional hours
- Paid statutory holidays, either on the holiday or as a paid day in lieu
- Employee food and beverage benefits
Based on current tip-share levels and full achievement of performance bonuses, total annual cash compensation can reach approximately $60,000–$63,000. We're looking for someone who wants more than simply their next restaurant management job. We want someone who wants to be part of an independent hospitality business that cares about its people, takes pride in how it operates and is committed to making their time with us a positive one.
