This role provides strategic engineering leadership for the reliability improvement, maintenance optimization, and performance enhancement of critical rotating equipment. Primary focus on improving the reliability and performance of critical rotating equipment (gas turbines, steam turbines, hydro turbines, generators, pumps, compressors, motors, fans, and gearboxes) through a combination of hands-on troubleshooting techniques, engineering analysis, and reliability strategy development. The position leads complex technical investigations, develops rotating equipment reliability strategies, influences capital investment decisions, and mentors engineering staff. Working collaboratively with Operations, Maintenance, Asset Management, and Project Delivery teams, the Senior Plant Engineer drives continuous improvement initiatives that improve equipment availability, reduce lifecycle costs, and mitigate operational risk. Responsibilities align with industry practices for rotating equipment reliability, machinery performance, predictive maintenance, and asset management.Key AccountabilitiesTechnical lead for rotating equipment reliability, develop long-term reliability improvement strategies for critical rotating assets.Support in root cause failure analyses and major equipment investigations.Identify chronic equipment issues and implement sustainable corrective actions.Establish asset health indicators, reliability metrics,
and performance benchmarks.Provide engineering leadership during forced outages, major overhauls, and commissioning activities.Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers.Learn and become familiar with assigned technical tasks, methodologies, and practicesProvide assistance and prepare project plans and monitor project costs and schedulesPerform technical and economic analysis of alternative solutions for project business cases, and make recommendations on courses of actionPrepare project plans, monitor costs and schedules, and initiate corrective action as appropriateProvide direction for construction and commissioning projects and initiativesDevelop criteria, guidelines, standards, and new practices based upon codes, technologies, and methodologiesProvide direction to technologists, technicians, consultants, and management staffProvide direction to staff, consultants and other external technical agencies as requiredOther related duties as assignedKnowledge/Skills/AbilitiesBachelor's Degree in Mechanical EngineeringEligible for membership in the Association of Professional Engineers of Saskatchewan (APEGS)Professional Engineering Designation P.Eng.A minimum of six (6) years post P. Eng. relevant experience that includes: experience in power generation, utilities, heavy industrial, refinery, or petrochemical environments.Extensive experience with rotating equipment including turbines, generators, pumps, compressors, fans, motors, and auxiliary systems.Demonstrated experience leading root cause investigations, reliability improvement initiatives, and major equipment projects.ISO Vibration Analyst certification (Category II, or higher)Experience working with additional predictive technologies (motion amplification, oil analysis,
ultrasonic)Experience supporting commissioning and performance testing of hydroelectric generation.A combination of the following engineering tasks: planning, designing, constructing, operating, commissioning of facilities, management, and coordination of technical aspects of contracts and/or technical coordination of highly complex projectsDemonstrated competency in engineering, maintain knowledge on industry standards, industry trends and developments, internal processes, and proceduresDemonstrated ability to provide recommendations and influence decision makingDemonstration of strong relationships with working groups, committees and technical leaders across the organization and external partnersAbility to provide competent leadership, including, coaching and development of technical staff including engineers, engineers-in-training and other resources as requiredDeep and/or broad experience providing guidance and expertise on complex technical issues.Results oriented thinker, with the ability to manage and provide advice regarding complex and confidential issues with sensitivity and professionalismAbility to work and manage in a changing environmentStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsExcellent facilitation, project management and decision-making skillsAbility to foster a culture focused on safety, innovation, and teamworkDemonstrated skill in SaskPower's CompetenciesMust have a continuing record of professional developmentA suitable combination of relevant education and experience may also be consideredCandidates under consideration may be required to participate in an assessment process consisting of any/all of the following: interview, abilities test, case study and/or presentation.At SaskPower, we believe in the importance of fostering and maintaining a workforce that's representative of the communities we serve.
