Broadcast Technician

We are looking for a dedicated and skilled Broadcast Technician to join our technical team and help us keep the signal strong, the broadcasts flawless, and the local news on the air.
Position Summary
As a Broadcast Technician at CHCH, you will play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations and technical stability of our live and pre-recorded television broadcasts. You will be responsible for the installation, operation, troubleshooting, and repair of a wide range of broadcast technology, from traditional baseband video systems to modern IT-based networking environments.

Key Responsibilities:
- Live Broadcast Support: Provide technical support during live news programming and studio productions, ensuring all audio, video, and transmission equipment operates seamlessly.
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform preventative maintenance, diagnosis, and component-level repair on broadcast equipment, including studio cameras, production switchers, audio consoles, graphics systems, and routing switchers.
- IT & Network Administration: Support the integration and maintenance of IP-based broadcast systems, networked storage, and digital asset management systems.
- Remote & Field Operations: Assist with the setup,
testing, and technical operation of ENG (Electronic News Gathering) and cellular bonded backpack solutions (e.g., Dejero) for field reporters.
- System Integration: Assist the Engineering team with equipment upgrades, cabling, and new technology installations within the studio and master control room.
- Troubleshooting: Respond swiftly to technical emergencies and on-air discrepancies, implementing effective workarounds to minimize downtime.
Qualifications
- Education: A Degree or Diploma in Broadcast Engineering, Electronics, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline.
- Experience: A minimum of 2-3 years of technical experience in a live television broadcast or production environment.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of HD/SDI video systems and audio routing.
- Familiarity with modern broadcast IT networking (TCP/IP, VLANs, switches) and emerging IP broadcast standards (NDI/Dante).
- Knowledge of satellite downlink systems is an asset.
- Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication skills, and the capacity to remain calm and focused in high-pressure, time-sensitive situations.
- Flexibility: Television is a 24/7 business. Must be willing and available to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the news cycle.
- Mobility:
A valid Ontario Driver’s License in good standing is required.
