Swift Underground specializes in utility infrastructure construction and is based in Steinbach, Manitoba. We use industry-leading equipment and technologies to construct and install fibre optic cabling and conduit, sewer and water infrastructure, and geothermal ground loops across Western Canada and Ontario.

Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Excavator Operator to join our existing sewer & water crews. The Excavator Operator will be responsible for safely and efficiently performing excavation, trenching, backfilling, grading, material placement, and other earthwork activities while working closely with the Foreman, Pipelayers, and other crew members.

This position requires an experienced operator who is familiar and comfortable working around existing underground utilities and in active construction environments. The operator must be capable of performing precise excavation and trenching while maintaining required depths, grades, slopes, and alignments and adhering to strict safety requirements.

This position will require you to be able to travel for out-of-town projects in Western Canada and Ontario. Tools and equipment are provided.

Essential Job Functions:

- Safely and efficiently operate excavators and other heavy equipment used in sewer and water construction.
- Perform excavation and trenching for sewer mains, water mains, services, manholes, hydrants, and other underground infrastructure.
- Excavate to required depths, grades, slopes, and alignments in accordance with construction drawings, specifications, and direction from the Foreman.
- Assist with exposing existing utilities using mechanical excavation and hand excavation where appropriate.
- Maintain safe excavations and trenches using sloping, benching, shoring, and other protective measures as required by legislation, company procedures,



and site conditions.
- Load, unload, and secure construction materials and equipment.
- Work closely with Pipelayers to maintain proper excavation and trench dimensions, pipe grades, elevations, and working conditions.
- Operate equipment safely around workers, vehicles, structures, overhead hazards, and underground utilities.
- Conduct daily pre-use inspections, monitor equipment performance, and report any defects, damage, or maintenance to our Mechanics.
- Work scheduled shifts, including overtime, based on project timelines and operational needs.
- Must be able to travel and work on out-of-town projects.

Position Qualifications:

- Minimum 5 years of excavator operating experience is required.
- Previous experience in sewer & water or underground construction industry is considered a strong asset.
- Robust understanding of excavation and trenching safety and working around underground utilities.
- Ability to work effectively outdoors in variable weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with Foremen, Pipelayers, Labourers, and other equipment operators.
- Ability to read and understand construction drawings, plans, grades, elevations, and specifications.
- Commitment to following all company policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Ability to use a variety of power tools, hand tools, and specialized construction equipment.
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required. Possession of, or willingness to obtain, a Class 3 license with Air Brakes is considered a strong asset.

Compensation:

Beginning salary of $30-$40/hr based on experience.

Daily per diem and company paid lodgings provided for eligible out-of-town projects (amount and eligibility based on project specifications and company policy).

Wage increases and advancement opportunities are available based on performance and skill development.
