Key Details:

Job Title: Facility Maintenance Technician

Type: Full-time, Contract (Tuesday – Saturday)

Location: 3701 Danforth Avenue, Scarborough, ON M1N 2G2. This is a fully on-site position.

Salary: The salary for this position ranges from $45,000 to $50,000, depending on experience and qualifications. A comprehensive benefits package is also included.

Variety - the Children’s Charity (Ontario) supports programming for children with a disability at Variety Village and throughout the province. Variety - the Children's Charity (Ontario) is part of an international charity that has been in operation since 1928. The charity began in Pittsburgh and spread throughout the United States. The chapter in Ontario was the first chapter outside the United States and is now one of the 5 Variety Chapters in Canada.

It was founded in 1945, and the original mission of the charity was to build a school for boys with a disability who could not receive an education in the mainstream school system. The school was called Variety Village.

Variety Village operated as a school until it became a centre of para-sport excellence.

Since the 1970s, Variety athletes and coaches have represented Canada at every summer Paralympic games. Currently, Variety Village is a 170,000 square foot facility and operates as a fitness centre for the general community as well as offering programs, training and camps for children of all ages and abilities.

The Opportunity:

Serving as a key operational support role, the Facility Maintenance Technician focuses on maintaining a high-standard member experience through hands-on facility repairs and supporting the Building Services Manager with facility maintenance activities.

Responsibilities include conducting routine facility inspections, assisting with maintaining cleanliness standards alongside a third-party janitorial service provider, and supporting facility operations, special events, and day-to-day operational needs.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

General:

- Perform routine facility inspections and identifies maintenance, safety, and operational concerns requiring attention.
- Ensure exterior areas of the building are maintained and free from hazards, including garbage, debris, snow, ice, and other obstacles.
- Perform general repairs and preventative maintenance tasks, including repairs to dispensers, fixtures, equipment, and other facility items.
- Assist with monitoring basic building systems, including boilers, HVAC systems, pools, and other mechanical areas, and reports any concerns or irregularities.
- Respond proactively to maintenance needs and addresses issues upon discovery.
- Support cleanliness standards by working alongside the third-party janitorial service provider and ensuring maintenance-related concerns are addressed.
- Ensure parking lots, walkways, and entrances are safe and maintained during inclement weather.
- Perform basic maintenance tasks such as vacuuming air vents and diffusers.

Administrative:

- Complete and follows up on internal work orders.
- Maintain accurate records related to maintenance activities and completed tasks.
- Follow all health and safety legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Assist with obtaining quotes, tracking supplies, and supporting purchasing processes in accordance with Finance procedures.
- Maintain positive working relationships with contractors, suppliers, and internal department.




- Perform other related duties to support departmental and organizational needs.

Budgetary Responsibilities:

- Provide input regarding facility maintenance needs, supplies, and operational requirements.
- Work within established budget guidelines.

Education / Certifications:

- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Post-secondary education or training in building maintenance, facility operations, skilled trades, or a related field is an asset.
- Pool Operator Certification (POC) is considered an asset.
- Additional certifications in areas such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or building systems are considered an asset.

Knowledge and Experience:

- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in facility maintenance, building operations, or a related maintenance role.
- Experience performing general repairs, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting facility-related issues.
- Knowledge of basic building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical equipment.
- Experience using a variety of maintenance tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Experience responding to work orders and prioritizing maintenance requests.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety practices and procedures.
- Experience working in a recreation, fitness, community, or high-traffic facility environment is an asset.
- Experience working with contractors, service providers, and external vendors is an asset.

Skills and Competencies:

- Solid mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve basic maintenance issues.
- Proactive approach with strong attention to detail and the ability to identify facility needs before they become larger issues.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with internal teams.
- Solid inclusive customer service skills, communicating patiently with members of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to ensure a safe and welcoming facility environment.
- Ability to follow established procedures, complete documentation, and maintain accurate work records.
