Perform in an advanced technical role conducting strategic subsurface work designed to support geoscientific-subsurface engineering issues facing Alberta, which is guided by the AGS operational plan. Provide engineering advice, guidance, and leadership on large multi-disciplinary projects which may span outside of immediate job area to support both short-term and long-term Branch or Division level decision making. Accountable for delivering results through publication of technical reports, maps, digital information, and peer-reviewed literature.
Actively manage data acquired or produced during AGS project work. Works to ensure data and information is stored and described according to best-practice standards for re-use and is handled and protected after project is complete. Provides reservoir engineering support and geological pore space management expertise to other branches in the AER through participation in AER projects or upon request.
Reservoir simulation and analytical modelling techniques to evaluate subsurface fluid flow, pressure behaviour, injectivity and long-term performance of reservoirs under production, disposal or storage scenarios. Mentor engineers in addressing complex, poorly defined reservoir engineering challenges. Bachelor of Engineering degree along with 10+ years of progressive related experience in reservoir engineering or related oil and gas discipline;
Experience supporting Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) initiatives, with knowledge of Alberta's subsurface regulatory and technical environment. Strong experience in reservoir engineering fundamentals, including reservoir simulation,
reserve/resource characterization and application to injection processes, pressure management, and subsurface storage systems (CCUS and disposal). Knowledge of geological pore space issues as it relates to subsurface fluid flow (i.e. disposal, brine hosted minerals, and geothermal) in Alberta is an asset.
Ability to support Measurement, Monitoring and Verification (MMV) plans and evaluating produced fluids or acid gas disposal, including injectivity, compatibility, and pressure transient analysis, would be an asset. Familiarity with AI-enabled approaches for analyzing large subsurface datasets, improving data integration, or supporting reservoir characterization and decision-making is an asset. Strong analytical, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to navigate complex technical issues and support risk-informed decisions in a dynamic setting.
Demonstrates expertise in reservoir engineering, including reservoir simulation and geological pore space management, while effectively communicating findings to diverse stakeholders. Proven ability to mentor engineers and support Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) initiatives within Alberta's regulatory framework.
