Description This PhD project addresses a critical gap in hypersonic testing capabilities by developing a novel dual-stage plasma wind tunnel that overcomes the limitations of existing facilities. The research focuses on creating a contamination-free testing environment capable of replicating true atmospheric re-entry conditions at Mach 12+ speeds.

- Technical Innovation: The project integrates an Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) source for reliable, pristine plasma generation with a Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) acceleration system to achieve controlled high-velocity flows without electrode contamination.
- Digital Twin Development: A high-fidelity computational model will be developed to provide real-time facility optimization and predictive capabilities, combining experimental diagnostics with physics-informed simulations.
- Defense Applications: The research directly supports UK hypersonic defense resilience by enabling accurate characterization of re-entry emissions and thermal protection system performance under realistic conditions.
- Sovereign Capability: Supported by the UK Space Agency, this project delivers critical national infrastructure for advanced aerospace testing and sustainable space operations.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Minkwan Kim and Professor Andrea Cammarano in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The project offers comprehensive funding including a tax-free stipend of up to £31,000 per year plus research and travel budgets. Applicants must hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant engineering or physical sciences discipline.
