About the Program The Morningstar Classroom pilot program is a unique, innovative mixed‑age Grades 1–3 program at Nelson Waldorf School. It blends inspiration from the Waldorf campus and pedagogy, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and nature‑based experiential learning, with a strong emphasis on neurodiversity‑affirming practices. Approximately 50% have diagnosed neurodiverse learning profiles, and the program is intentionally designed to support them through rhythm, movement, sensory regulation, and flexible pathways to learning.
The teacher in this role leads a single, cohesive classroom with differentiated instruction, competency‑based groupings, and extensive outdoor learning in the school’s forest, garden, and natural play spaces.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Curriculum
- Lead a mixed‑age Grades 1–4 classroom using Waldorf‑inspired pedagogy, story‑based teaching, and arts‑integrated instruction.
- Design and deliver Main Lesson blocks aligned with developmental stages and the school’s yearly curriculum map.
- Implement UDL principles to provide multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression.
- Facilitate outdoor experiential learning including forest exploration, gardening, nature journaling, and practical arts.
- Differentiate instruction for a wide range of competencies, learning profiles, and ages.
Neurodiversity & Student Support
- Create a sensory‑aware, movement‑rich classroom environment that supports ADHD and neurodiverse learners.
- Collaborate with Learning Support staff to implement IEP goals and accommodations.
- Use proactive regulation strategies such as outdoor breaks, co‑regulation, visual schedules, and predictable rhythms.
Classroom Culture & Community
- Establish a warm, inclusive, Waldorf‑aligned classroom culture grounded in rhythm, imagination, and respect.
- Engage in parent communication through weekly updates, parent circle meetings, and narrative reporting.
- Participate in festivals, faculty meetings, and school events as part of the Nelson Waldorf School community.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain student records and portfolios in alignment with school and Ministry expectations.
- Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum, child studies, and school-wide initiatives.
- Engage in ongoing career development in Waldorf education, UDL, and neurodiversity-affirming practice.
