Seeking a highly experienced, safe, and professional Self-Defense Instructor to lead beginner sessions for youth (ages 4–18) and women. This program is strictly non-sparring, beginner-level, and held in dance or community studios (no pads or gym equipment)
The goal of these sessions is to provide practical "street-style" safety skills through lesson plans that are relevant to either women or kids/youth through interactive games, beginner escapes and stance practice, situational awareness discussions, and confidence-building exercises. We want our participants to feel empowered, aware, and safe in their everyday environments.
The instructor must have a 2026 Vulnerable Sector Police Check (or agree to get one), 10 yrs+ instructing self-defense for both kids and women, CPR Level C, Professional Personal Liability Insurance, and can drive/commute easily on Saturday afternoons to West Toronto.
May instruct up to 6 workshops a year.
Responsibilities
- Instructs a 60-minute street-style self-defense session that is fun, safe, and effective for kids, youth and women with no self-defense experience (no sparring)
- Leads an effective beginner curriculum for youth ages 4 to 18 yrs-old and women up to 20 per class.
- Can provide pads and gloves for strikes and kicks practice
- Teaches escapes from common attacks and grab holds that are age appropriate
- Discusses situational awareness in the city
- Is comfortable supporting at risk youth living in communities with high gun violence rates and women's only classes upon request
- Is comfortable instructing community classes in a community center and kids club
- Must be comfortable instructing a kid's class size of up to 20
- Can explain drills and games safely and effectively to kids and prevent injuries
- Has worked with vulnerable kids and youth
- Has a car and can commute to West Toronto and outer communities on occasion such as York region, North Etobicoke, East York, and Scarborough areas
- Shows compassion for kid's with special needs
- Able to lift up to 10lbs and can arrange a space (push tables and chairs to the side)
- Shows up 10 minutes before and ends on time
- Open to receiving regular feedback in person and via phone
- Able to communicate all issues and concerns in a timely manner by phone and in-person (being late, cancellations, issues, etc)
- Shows professionalism at all times and upholds our code of ethics
- Agrees not to promote themselves, their classes/services or other companies in class
Must Haves
- Experience: Minimum of 10 years of training in self-defense or martial arts at a company/school (Krav Maga, Jeet Kwan Do, MMA, etc)
- Instructional Background: Proven experience teaching children and teenagers and women's only classes
- Certification: CPR level C
- Insurance: Must hold current Personal Liability Insurance
- Clearances: Must provide a recent Police Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).
- Availability: Flexible to drive/travel to outer-area community spaces on select weeknights and Saturdays, with a focus on West Toronto
- 2 relevant references (from a company/school you have taught for)
Applicants with the following experience are likely to be considered: an NCCP coach, School Teacher, Physical Education Teacher, Army veteran, Security Specialist, those with over 10 years of self-defense instruction
Flat Rate:
This is an Independant contact instructor position that provides a $100 flat per hour The Interview Process has 3 steps:
1. To save time, Sumera will call applicants to discuss the position and get a sense of their qualifications and availability before setting up a formal Zoom interview.
2.
A mock-up class on Zoom where the candidate leads Sumera through a kid's self-defense class.
3. If selected, can provide 2 relevant references, a valid police check (vulnerable sector check), copies of their diplomas/certifications, government ID, valid CPR certificate, personal professional liability insurance, and the signing of a contract instructor agreement outlining the terms and conditions.
Job Types: Casual, Seasonal Pay: $100.00 per hour

- This position is a sub-contract position with a flat rate of $100 per hour. The instructor chosen may be asked to support up to 6 workshops a year for Sumera's annual dance and street safety series and/or her clients in the Bloor West - High Park area. Some sessions may be on weeknights/Saturdays in the outer communities.
Some sessions may be for kids or teens and some women's only. Priority will be placed on those that can meet our needs easily.
