A major Canadian insurer is looking for a technically strong Financial Reporting leader to help steer its insurance finance function through a period of continued regulatory and reporting evolution — with IFRS 17 and IFRS 9 at the centre of the mandate.
The Opportunity
As Senior Director, Financial Reporting, you will lead the external and regulatory financial reporting function for a complex insurance business, working closely with the FP&A; leadership team as part of a broader Finance leadership group. You will own the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial statements and regulatory filings, and act as the technical accounting authority on IFRS 17 and IFRS 9 matters across the organization.
This is a highly technical, highly visible mandate. You will partner with senior actuarial, finance, and audit stakeholders to ensure reporting frameworks reflect current standards, and you will play a key role in ongoing refinement of IFRS 17 processes post-implementation.
What You'll Do
- Lead the financial reporting function for a complex insurance business, overseeing statutory, regulatory (OSFI), and external financial reporting
- Act as the senior technical resource on IFRS 17 and IFRS 9 application, interpretation, and ongoing process refinement
- Partner with actuarial, tax, and audit teams to ensure reporting outputs are accurate, well-controlled, and defensible
- Oversee the preparation and review of financial statements, disclosures, and regulatory filings
- Identify and lead process improvements as reporting requirements and standards continue to evolve
- Present findings, risks, and reporting implications to senior finance leadership and audit committees
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of financial reporting professionals
Must-Have Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive financial/accounting reporting experience, with significant exposure to life insurance or group benefits
- Hands-on IFRS 17 experience — ideally including direct involvement in an implementation
- Solid working knowledge of IFRS 9 and its interaction with insurance reporting
- Proven ability to translate complex technical accounting requirements into practical reporting processes
- Experience partnering with actuarial and audit stakeholders in a regulated insurance environment
- Big 4 public accounting background
Nice to Have
- Experience with OSFI regulatory reporting requirements
- Exposure to actuarial concepts or valuation methodology
- Experience leading or supporting system/process changes tied to IFRS 17 implementation
Why This Role?
- Technical ownership — you'll be the go-to authority on two of the most consequential accounting standards in insurance finance today
- High visibility — direct exposure to senior Finance leadership and audit committee
- A team and mandate built around getting IFRS 17 reporting right long after go-live, not just through implementation
