The Opportunity This is not a transactional customs role.
It is a senior-level position where your knowledge becomes the backbone of compliance integrity and client confidence.
You will be relied upon to interpret and apply Canadian import regulations across a wide range of scenarios, often serving as the escalation point for complex or ambiguous cases.
Beyond day-to-day processing, you will contribute to advisory work, support internal teams, and play a role in strengthening client compliance frameworks.
There is also a visible element to the role.
You may be involved in training sessions, client discussions, and knowledge-sharing initiatives that position you as a subject matter expert.
Position Description In this role, you will take ownership of the full lifecycle of customs compliance activities.
Releasing and accounting for shipments across all modes of transport Assigning accurate tariff classifications, including advanced use of Chapter 99 provisions Applying appropriate GST exemptions, excise taxes, and trade remedies where required Ensuring compliance with federal regulatory bodies and partner government agencies Supporting complex entries such as voluntary disclosures and temporary imports Acting as a resource for internal teams and external clients on regulatory interpretation Reviewing Free Trade documentation for accuracy and completeness Contributing to client databases with properly classified products and trade data Assisting with amendments, refunds,
and broader compliance initiatives Delivering or supporting training sessions and educational content when required This role blends technical execution with advisory responsibility, making it ideal for someone who enjoys both precision and problem-solving.
Experience 10+ years in customs compliance, brokerage, or consulting environments Experience handling complex classifications, regulatory interpretation, and client-facing advisory Exposure to multiple industries and product categories is strongly preferred Qualifications Deep understanding of Canadian import regulations, including valuation, origin, and tariff classification Strong working knowledge of government agency requirements and trade compliance frameworks Familiarity with trade remedies, excise considerations, and import/export permitting Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables and data analysis Strong analytical mindset with exceptional attention to detail Ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines in a rapid-paced environment Clear and professional communication skills, both written and verbal CCS designation required; additional certifications considered an asset Education Secondary school diploma required Customs Certified Specialist (CCS) designation is required Additional certifications such as CTCS or other trade compliance credentials are considered strong assets This role places a high value on formal customs education and ongoing professional development, reflecting the technical depth and regulatory responsibility associated with the position.
