Your Opportunity
The successful candidate will provide essential support within the Operative Services DTC, including the Operating Theatres, Pre-operative Area, and Recovery Room. This role is integral to maintaining the efficiency and safety of surgical procedures and patient care.
Primary duties include patient transport, environmental cleaning, restocking supplies, and the safe handling of medical equipment and sterile products.
Key Responsibilities: Patient Support & Transport: Assist nursing and medical staff with lifting, positioning, and transferring patients. Support patients during special procedures (e.g., limb holding for prepping, positioning for spinal anesthesia). Transport patients to and from the department before and after surgery.
Equipment & Supply Management: Transport equipment and instruments to and from the department. Deliver specimens and blood products to and from the laboratory. Safely transport, store, and handle medical gases in accordance with Canadian Safety Standards.
Restock hospital equipment and sterile supplies as required.
Prepare
Sutures, instruments and equipment for surgical procedures. Set up gas machines and assist with assembling OR tables under the direction of clinical staff.
Environmental
Hygiene & Safety: Perform thorough cleaning and disinfection of the Operating Room and patient-use equipment. Ensure proper disposal of biohazardous materials in appropriate containers. Comply with Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) standards at all times. Report any concerns regarding equipment, supplies, or safety hazards to the Unit Manager, Supervisor or Team Lead.
Professional Development:
Maintain current certifications and ongoing education (e.g., ROLs training). Stay informed on departmental procedures and safety protocols.
Orientation: 2 months full time hours orientation required.
Description
As a Service Worker II, you will be responsible for readying supplies, and cleaning/disinfecting instruments and specialty equipment for immediate use/reuse by healthcare staff. You will distribute and replenish patient care supplies, perform quality control tests on equipment and record maintenance data. You may also transport patients (clients/residents), equipment, lab specimens, blood and blood products, and patient charts.
You will report any concerns regarding supplies and safety issues to Unit Managers and perform other duties as required. In addition, you will ensure that patient care areas and other assigned areas are accurately stocked and that specialty equipment required by the healthcare staff is available.

Required Qualifications
Grade 12 or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications
All duties require the ability to function effectively as part of a team-oriented healthcare team. The shared goal is to maintain a clean, well-equipped, and safe patient environment—one that staff can take pride in and where patients receive the highest standard of care.
Current Alberta
Heart & Stroke BLS Provider certification (mandatory). WHMIS training and application knowledge (required). Fluent in reading, writing, and verbal communication in English. Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Recent experience (at least 1 year) in a similar role in an operating room setting is required. Proven experience with patient transport and operating room cleaning/restocking is essential. Physically capable of standing and walking for extended periods of time.
Able to perform repetitive tasks throughout the shift. Able to lift, push, and pull up to 20 lbs. of force safely and correctly. Reliable, cooperative, and highly adaptable to changing priorities. Able to thrive in a fast-paced, high-demand setting.
A sincere interest in healthcare and a strong desire to support patient well-being. Must have the ability to successfully complete orientation at 37.5 hours per week.
Preferred Qualifications
Recent experience in EVS is considered an asset. Knowledge of proper body mechanics (asset).
