ARET 2602 Structural Technology 3 (3,3,0)

Credits: 6 credits

This course introduces students to fundamental concepts in structural analysis, and design and construction of wood structures. Structural analysis includes the load path, arches, cable structures, buckling, combined stresses from bending and shear, statically indeterminate beams and their application in some steel elements. Topics include wood material properties for durability and sustainable construction, purlins, beams, girders, pin-ended columns, beam-columns, plywood, glu-lam and connection design using nails, bolts, lag screws and timber rivets.

The sessional instructor will be responsible for the lectures and one section of the seminar for this class. Class time is six hours per week. The instructor must also be available at predetermined times during the week to answer student questions outside of the scheduled class times. Marking of all seminar assignments, quizzes and exams for the course, as well as periodic meetings with other ARET faculty is also required.

The successful candidate will be a civil or building technologist, intern architect, architect, engineer in training or engineer with experience in the design of building structures.



Some teaching experience or teaching assistant experience would be an asset.
