Our client is seeking an experienced Senior SQL Server Database Administrator to join their Enterprise DBA team. This is a hands-on senior technical role supporting a large-scale enterprise SQL Server environment, where reliability, performance, security, and operational excellence are critical to business success.

Working with a high degree of autonomy, you will lead complex troubleshooting efforts, drive database modernization initiatives, and ensure the stability of mission-critical SQL Server platforms. The successful candidate will bring deep technical expertise, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a commitment to documentation, automation, and knowledge sharing while collaborating closely with infrastructure, application, security, and operations teams. Participation in the team's on-call rotation is an integral part of this role.

Responsibilities

- Provide senior-level administration, support, and operational ownership of enterprise Microsoft SQL Server environments, resolving complex production issues while ensuring high availability, security, and optimal performance.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize SQL Server health, capacity, and reliability, while administering backup and recovery solutions, Always On Availability Groups, clustering, replication, log shipping, and Commvault.
- Lead SQL Server installations, upgrades, migrations, patching, configuration changes, and platform modernization initiatives across production and non-production environments.




- Partner with application, infrastructure, and security teams to support database deployments, production incidents, change management activities, and rapidly become an active contributor to the on-call support rotation.
- Develop and enhance T-SQL scripts, PowerShell automation, monitoring solutions, and standardized DBA processes to improve operational efficiency, consistency, and long-term platform supportability.
- Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, operational runbooks, and support procedures while mentoring team members, sharing knowledge, and identifying opportunities to improve the overall SQL Server environment.

Qualifications

- 8+ years of hands-on Microsoft SQL Server Database Administration experience supporting complex, enterprise-scale production environments, with the ability to work independently and take ownership of critical technical issues.
- Deep expertise with Microsoft SQL Server 2016 and newer versions, including database architecture, performance tuning, query optimization, Query Store, execution plans, DMVs, wait statistics, indexing strategies, memory management, and transaction processing.




- Extensive experience implementing and supporting High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions, including Always On Availability Groups, Windows Server Failover Clustering, SQL Server replication, backup and recovery strategies, point-in-time restores, and Commvault.
- Strong scripting and automation experience using T-SQL and PowerShell, along with experience performing SQL Server installations, upgrades, migrations, security administration, vulnerability remediation, and enterprise monitoring using tools such as SolarWinds, SentryOne, Redgate, or SCOM.
- Experience working with Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, VMware, DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and large-scale SQL Server modernization or cloud migration initiatives is considered an asset.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and documentation skills with a collaborative mindset, demonstrated experience working within ITIL-based environments (including ServiceNow), and the ability to mentor others while participating in an enterprise on-call support rotation.

Pay: $80-90 per/hour incorporated Calgary or Vancouver based, needs to be able to go in office for workshops occasionally.
