The Role GFL Environmental is looking for a Financial Analyst to join our Finance team based out of our Vaughan Corporate Office. Reporting to the Senior Manager - FP&A;, this role supports Payroll Accounting by performing accurate, timely reconciliations and analysis of payroll-related and benefit-related accounts for both our United States and Canada entities. The Financial Analyst ensures completeness, compliance, and transparency across payroll clearing, benefit accruals, PTO, union remittances, and statutory accounts, while partnering closely with Payroll, HR, Finance, and external vendors as needed.
Key Responsibilities Payroll Account Reconciliations - Prepare monthly reconciliations for payroll clearing including garnishments, RSUs, and other payroll-related balance sheet accounts across US and Canada. Investigate discrepancies and drive timely resolution.
Benefit Account Reconciliations - Reconcile employer/employee deductions, vendor invoices of benefit accruals. Validate accuracy of medical, dental, vision, retirement, and other benefit programs.
PTO Accounting - Maintain and reconcile PTO balances. Ensure alignment between HRIS balances, payroll outputs, and GL postings.
Union Payroll & Benefit Reconciliations - Reconcile union dues, pension contributions, health & welfare remittances, and other collectively bargained obligations. Validate payroll calculations against collective agreements and ensure accuracy.
Variance Analysis - Analyze benefit accruals prepared by the Benefits team, ensuring accuracy of monthly accrual calculations, alignment with payroll deductions,



and preparing additional accruals when necessary to ensure complete and accurate financial reporting.
Cross-Functional Collaboration - Partner with Payroll, HR and Finance team to ensure alignment between Workday, payroll systems, GL postings, and vendor billing.
Process Improvement - Identify opportunities to streamline reconciliations, automate reporting, and enhance accuracy of payroll, benefit, PTO, and union accounting flows.
Reporting & Documentation - Prepare monthly close schedules, flux explanations, and supporting documentation. Assist with audit requests by providing reconciliations, variance analyses, and required backup in a timely and accurate manner.
Ad-Hoc Duties - Support various ad-hoc requests, including reporting and analytics, maintaining Variances Analysis collecting from region controllers, tracking KPIs, supporting in Statistics Canada surveys, tax levy reviews, policy changes, and other payroll or benefit-related investigations as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Competencies Post-Secondary education in Finance, Accounting or related field of study.
2-5 years of experience in payroll accounting or GL reconciliation within a corporate accounting function.
Proficient with Microsoft Excel, with the ability to analyze large datasets and build structured reconciliation templates.
Proficiency with Workday, ADP or similar payroll systems.
Strong attention to detail, analytical mindset, and ability to explain complex variances clearly.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
