About the Firm

We are a growing small CPA firm providing accounting, tax, and advisory services to owner-managed businesses and individuals. As a smaller practice, we offer a hands-on working environment where team members are exposed to a broad range of accounting and tax work and have the opportunity to work directly with clients.

We are looking for a Staff Accountant who is organized, dependable, comfortable working independently, and interested in developing a well-rounded skill set in public practice.

Position Overview The Staff Accountant will assist with corporate and personal tax compliance, year-end financial statements, bookkeeping, payroll, and other accounting and tax matters.

This position is well suited to someone who enjoys working with small and medium-sized businesses and wants broader exposure than may typically be available in a highly departmentalized accounting firm.

The successful candidate will work closely with the firm's CPA and bookkeeping team and will gradually take on increased responsibility for client files as their experience develops.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include

- Preparing working papers and year-end financial statements for owner-managed businesses.
- Preparing corporate income tax returns (T2).
- Preparing personal income tax returns (T1).
- Assisting with GST/HST and other government filings.
- Reviewing bookkeeping records and identifying adjustments required for year-end.
- Preparing adjusting journal entries and reconciling balance sheet accounts.
- Reviewing general ledgers for unusual or incorrectly recorded transactions.
- Assisting with payroll-related filings, including T4 and T5 information returns.
- Working with QuickBooks Online and other cloud-based accounting systems.
- Communicating with clients to obtain missing information and resolve accounting questions.

- Assisting with CRA correspondence, notices of assessment, and information requests.
- Maintaining organized electronic working papers and client documentation.
- Assisting with tax planning and other advisory projects as experience develops.
- Supporting the firm during personal and corporate tax filing deadlines.

Qualifications The ideal candidate will have:
- A diploma or degree in accounting, business, or a related field.
- Previous accounting or public practice experience is preferred, although strong candidates with relevant education and limited experience will be considered.
- Working knowledge of Canadian accounting and income tax concepts.
- Experience with QBO is an asset.
- Experience preparing T1 and T2 tax returns is an asset.
- Strong Excel skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- The ability to manage multiple client files and deadlines.
- The ability to work independently while knowing when to ask questions.
- A skilled and respectful approach when dealing with clients and confidential financial information.

CPA students or candidates interested in pursuing the CPA designation are encouraged to apply.

What We Are Looking For

Because we are a small firm, we are looking for someone who is comfortable taking ownership of their work rather than simply completing individual assigned tasks.

The right person will be:

- Reliable and accountable.
- Willing to learn.

- Comfortable asking questions when something does not make sense.
- Able to research accounting and tax issues before escalating them.
- Interested in understanding the client's business rather than simply entering numbers into a working paper.
- Comfortable communicating directly with small-business owners.
- Able to prioritize work when several deadlines are approaching.
- Interested in developing a long-term role within a small professional practice.

What We Offer Working in a small CPA firm provides the opportunity to gain exposure to the complete client relationship—from bookkeeping and year-end accounting through tax compliance and planning.

We offer

- Direct mentorship from an experienced CPA.
- Exposure to a broad range of industries and owner-managed businesses.
- Opportunities to develop both accounting and tax experience.
- Increasing responsibility and client interaction as experience develops.
- A collaborative, small-team working environment.
- Support for professional development and CPA studies, where applicable.
- Competitive compensation based on education and experience.
