Duties And Responsibilities
The Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub (BEKH) is a collaborative, co-generated, and high-quality national data and knowledge platform that reflects the state of Black entrepreneurship in Canada, and is a key part of the Government of Canada’s Black Entrepreneurship Program. BEKH is a national network of six regional research hubs with the mandate of co-creating and co-generating community-focused research to ensure Black businesses are able reach their full potential. The knowledge and national data generated from the Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub seeks to address the current dearth, fragmented and anecdotal state of information on Black entrepreneurship. BEKH’s aim is to deliver on important knowledge, insights and outcomes that resonate with the local regional needs of Black entrepreneurs,
community members and organizations across Canada.
The senior research scientist provides technical and research expertise for the BEKH project. The incumbent oversees research design, data collection, analysis, and the development and implementation of data standardization methods. In addition to assuming responsibility for assessing and integrating outputs from targeted research initiatives, this person plays a key role in developing the State of Black Entrepreneurship Report, ensuring methodological rigor, high-quality data, and the effective translation of research findings into actionable insights for the project. This bilingual researcher must have strong quantitative knowledge and experience, as well as strong communication and writing skills.
Key Accountabilities Include
Planning and leading research design and data collection methodology
Researching and collecting data through complex techniques and procedures, library research, structured interviews or other project specific methodology
Developing data analysis plans and identifying the analytic techniques best to address the research question(s) at hand
Interpreting, synthesizing and analyzing of data
Scheduling, organizing, and reporting on the status of research activities
Planning and modifying research techniques, procedures, tests, equipment, or software management
Writing and editing materials for publication and presentation
Performing other related duties as required
Qualifications
Strong knowledge of research ethics, design, and methodologies
Good quantitative research skills and experience using software such as SPSS or STATA Knowledge of R, Python and other analytical software would be an asset
Ability to apply sound research techniques, methodology, and logical critical analysis
Strong organization and interpersonal skills
Strong writing, editing, and communication skills
Ability to work accurately, and to problem-solve methodological or technical issues that arise during the course of the research
Ability to interpret and identify key results from research and succinctly summarize findings in plain language in a range of outputs (slide decks, written reports, and other formats) tailored for varied diverse audiences
Oral and written communication skills to discuss and document research progress
Ability to work independently, or in team settings
Ability to work independently to meet defined timelines
Strong initiative
Ability to pay meticulous attention to detail and produce consistently high quality and trustworthy work
Awareness of intersectional considerations in research design, conduct, and analysis
Experience working with Black community research participants and organizations
Bilingualism (English/French) would be a robust asset for this position
Education And Experience
Post-doctoral, PhD or research Masters candidates and/or commensurate experience preferred
Experience in leading and planning the design, conduction and production of national large scale research studies
Demonstrated experience in researching, analyzing, synthesizing different types of research (academic, policy, gray literature), and experience in producing outputs for consumption by academics, policy makers, and the general public
Experience conducting and writing reviews of the literature, evidence and/or policy briefs and/or research snapshots is preferred
Experience working with categorical data would be an asset
Demonstrated project management experience in academic, research, or non-profit settings
Experience with multicultural partnerships preferred
