Professor Natasha Henry-Dixon is seeking two qualified Research Assistants who identify as persons of Black, African, or Caribbean descent to support the research project, Living on the Outskirts: Black History in York County North.

Project Summary
Living on the Outskirts: Black Historyin York County North is a two-year (2026-28) SSHRC-funded researchproject that seeks to unearth, document, and share the histories ofBlack inhabitants in the rural communities of York Region between the1840s to the 1920s. The project team includes Dr. Natasha Henry-Dixon,Assistant Professor of History (York University), as PrincipalInvestigator, a collaborating heritage institution, and a digitaldeveloper.

Responsibilities
The Undergraduate Research Assistant will support project and data management, including digital scanning and document organization. They will also receive training and support aspects of the research plan such as archival retrievals and the transcription of historical records. The Undergraduate Research Assistant will assist with the development of social media and digital content for the project and will also support the building of the project website with the web developer.

Qualifications

Be a current Undergraduate student in History, or a field (Humanities, Social Science)



with emerging experience or a keen interest in Black Canadian history research, Black Studies, or Black diaspora studies broadly

Proficiency with digital applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Drive, Google Sheets, Zoom, Teams, Zotero, and familiarity with project management tools (e.g. Basecamp)

Minimum Experience N/A

Compensation $25/hr + 4% vac pay + 10% perks

Hours per Week 10 hours/week, including evenings and occasional weekends

Position Duration September 2026 – June 2027, with option of renewal for July 2027 – May 2028

Position Start Date September 2026

Position End Date June 2027 (with option of renewal to May 2028)

Part-Time (Contract)
