Staff – Union Job Category CUPE 116 Job Profile CUPE 116 Hourly - Sales Clerk Job Title Sales Clerk (Rush) Department Retail Sales | UBCV | Bookstore | Student Housing and Community Services Compensation Range $26.45 - $27.82 CAD Hourly Posting End Date August 21, 2026 Note: Applications will be accepted until 11:59 PM on the Posting End Date. Job End Date September 12, 2026 These positions are in support of the Jumpstart move-in event. This will involve event setup and takedown activities, cash and pop ups store support from the period of August 24, 2026 to September 5, 2026. This posting is for eight (8) vacancies.
Job Description Summary Sales Clerks are involved in a variety of sales and order processing activities in serving the needs of Bookstore customers. Sales Clerks are expected to provide excellent customer service, be knowledgeable about the products the Bookstore sells and effectively display bookstore merchandise. This position requires the ability to provide customer service in all areas of the store.
Organizational Status Reports to the Bookstore Assistant, Section Head or Bookstore Retail Floor Supervisor as designated.
Work Performed Sales Clerk duties include: Assists customers by helping to locate and select products, answering inquiries (verbally or in writing) giving product demonstrations or providing product suggestions and accepting, recording, processing and filling special orders and/or requisitions; Proactively engages with customers to meet their needs and promote bookstore offerings; Operates point-of-sale terminal or invoicing equipment and accurately processing payments while safeguarding cash, other financial transaction material and protecting personal information; Processes online orders including picking merchandise and completing the sales transaction; Checks inventory levels and advising buyers of out-of-stock situations and sending orders to vendors according to procedures; Creates effective merchandise displays, stocking shelves and ensuring orderliness and attractiveness of stock layout; Prepares merchandise for sale as instructed; Recommends price mark-downs for supervisor's approval; Operates a computer terminal to access and input information as required; Maintains vigilance in order to ensure the safety of staff and customers and maintain the security of University property; Prepares surplus or defective merchandise for return to vendor; Assists with other duties in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of this classification.
Periodic Duties Assists in the counting and documentation of annual inventory; Assists in the distribution of regalia at Convocation.
Consequence of Error/Judgement Works within well defined guidelines and procedures, but is expected to exercise some initiative and judgment in establishing priorities and carrying tasks through to completion; new or unusual problems would be referred to supervisor.
Supervision Received Receives detailed instructions during orientation and training and on subsequent new assignments or changes in procedures. Carries out familiar phases of the work under general supervision.
Supervision Given Employees at this level do not supervise, but may explain work sequences to others.
Minimum Qualifications High school graduation or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications Knowledge and at least one year experience in retailing in related products.
Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner.
Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to operate a point-of-sale terminal in an efficient and accurate manner.
Ability communicate effectively and to respond appropriately to inquires in person, on phone, and in writing, and make appropriate recommendations or referrals as necessary.
Ability to effectively resolve client complaints in a calm, non-confrontational manner, and by exercising sound judgment.
Ability to effectively display and sell products and services.
Ability to quickly and efficiently stock merchandise, including items of varying size and weight.
Ability to operate computer and other related office equipment.
Ability to balance and complete multiple tasks in a variety of retail merchandise departments, , while ensuring customer satisfaction.
